Deallings with Outfitter

I had left a Lance camper with Mr. Ward of Outfitter several years ago on consignment. I'm posting this since I'm out of a camper and did not receive any compensation other that a argument. Below is our correspondence. Make your own judgement.

I spent 1500 to repair it not to move it, I tried to get enough to cover both of us but it didn't bring enough to cover labor. If you didn't want me to take it there after I told you,you should have express it then and come and pick it up and pay me for the work I did to try and make it safe enough to try to sell. I am not going to argue this anymore, you left it there for 3 years , I had to repair it to make it safe enough to load on a truck and lost money. If you want I can send you all the paperwork to show you.

I'm sure you recall, I did inquiry several times over the last three years, I never heard anything from you. Especially so, when I asked about not seeing the camper on your lot on google earth, you told me you had it moved, with no complaints. So, if you did spend 1500$ to move it, you lied to me then or are lying to me now.
You offered to take the camper on consignment and made it clear it was no problem sitting on your lot. You did not have my consent to move the camper.

You knew when you left it here that my guy that loads campers every day was afraid to unload it from your truck because the camper was falling apart. In fact we had to use our shop jacks to support it to remove it. I know what salvage is for a camper that is older and rotten and won't support its self, I was hoping I could fix the damage and try to recover but I lost money and it sat on there lot for a long time. You left it here, and told me just to try and get what I could out of it, and left me with a mess that I tried to recover on and I lost money on it, I guess I should have left it here on my lot to look bad and to just rot away waiting for you to come and try to get it on a truck to haul it to the dump. If you were worried about it you should have come and picked it up and not leave it for 3 years.

You didnt consult me, our agreement was a minimum of 1500 dollars. If you remember I asked about what happened to the camper when it wasn't visible on Google earth a year ago.
You told me you had it moved to a sales lot that did sell hardsides, never mentioned any problems .
So now what, I could easily get 1500 just in salvage.

I spent over 1500.00 of my own money to repair the camper where it collapsed so we could load it on a truck to take it to someone to sell it that sold hardsided campers, he sold it for enough to give me 800.00 to try and recover some of my money I lost which was -700.00.

Hello Bob,
It's been about three years ago that we made our purchase of the Apex and left our Lance with you on consignment. I haven't heard any thing from you regarding status, so I assume there has been no interested buyers. I'm making arrangements to make the trip to Colorado and pick up the camper. It looks like it will be around the first week of June.
Thanks, Joe

It sounds like you bought a camper from him and left your old one on his lot for him to sell for you. You had little or no contact with him about it for 3 years. You have now inquired about it and he said it was in poor condition, he tried to repair it, then had to have it hauled off because it would not sell.

I'm confused. Maybe a little more of the backstory might help?

This is probably not the best forum to air your grievances, the dealer has no chance to respond. There really is not enough information for anyone to make a judgement. This is probably better handled with the Better Business Bureau. Just a suggestion.

You left him a rotten piece of junk to try and sell. If it didn't sell within the first three months, you should have picked it up or lowered the price.

You left something for 3 years that you thought had value without any correspondence ? If it was there on consignment you...and he should have communicated.

First why would you leave it there for 3 years ?
Second why would he throw 1500.00 into something that was not his. He obviously knows the biz so I don't get it.
3rd Sounds to me like you both got exactly what you deserved.

You bought a camper from him and left yours to be sold on consignment for an agreed to minimum. You contacted him several times in the years after and he had not complaints or issues. You noticed the camper was missing from the lot and when asked he claimed it was taken to a better lot to be sold.

Then you said you were coming to pick it up - and the story changed.

He claims it was already sold and he had not informed you. (Why not?) He says he had made repairs, but had not gained your permission or even informed you. He says he sold it for less than the agreed to amount but now says there was no agreed to minimum. (Have to assume there was nothing in writing.) Then for the kicker, he says you get no money at all because his cost to perform repairs (by him) exceeded the money received. And if you do not believe him he will produce invoices for time and materials from himself to himself to prove it.

And the story changed when you informed him you were coming to pick it back up.

I doubt there is anything you can do at this point unless things were in writing and even then the travel and costs to pursue it work against you. Even if his claimed selling price is accurate and if he did in fact make repairs and his costs are accurate his methods and treatment of a customer who bought one of his campers is very poor.
And this is an appropriate forum to voice positive and negative experiences with products and services.
