Debating on a newer Tacoma

I currently have a 2006 TRD Sport DC 4x4 with only 114000 miles on the clock. I recently had the AT serviced and I keep up on the maintenance like clockwork so I know it’ll easily go another 100K or more. Though lately I’ve been looking at some of the newer TRD Off Road packages, specifically 2010 and newer. Other than the obvious differences between the Sport and Off Road package have there been any significant changes between my 06 and the 2010 and newer Tacoma’s? This is my DD with light weekend off-road use, backcountry camping, fishing, etc.

If I were you I would wait. Tacoma has gone a crazy amount of time before a complete redesign, its been 10 years now! I think its going to be another 2 years at least before a complete redesign since the TRD Pro Tacoma is coming out in a few months.

If you need a new Tacoma get the Pro.

You already have a "new" truck, as far as I'm concerned. I'd keep it!

I think most of the differences are styling-related, with the refreshed front clip and possible, slight cosmetic interior changes but I don't think any changes are substantial enough to warrant a swap.

I'm in the same boat but with a 2004 and after doing the math I didn't see how it made any sense to upgrade to a truck that has essentially the same engine and gets idential mpg as the one that you've got. Another year or two of waiting and there is hope that you might at least get a significant engine refresh with the nissan frontier and gmc colorado both getting big updates this year. its sad that in 10 years from my 2004 -> 2015 you can get 1mpg better, sure its got more power and is bigger, but not all of us are interested in the bigger is better. if i were you i'd wait, the 2015's will only be cheaper used if you don't like whatever the refreshed tacoma is in a year or two

The only significant changes, IMO, are the addition of roll-over side curtain airbags and the deletion of the mechanical limited slip diff in the sport. (MIT was replaced by an ABS based computerized limited slip system.) Most of the other changes were purely cosmetic.

2012-current have a slightly different front grill and exterior look but nothing major. Like was said above. Keep yours, and wait till ta complete redesign.

Infotainment upgrade in 2013 and standard in-dash rearview camera in 2014, IIRC, neither a big deal, although i do love the backup camera way more than i thought i would.

If your truck is paid off and you've taken good care of it, i'd suggest taking your money and upgrading your current ride. Add lockers, lifts, etc. to your taste. No reason why your truck can't be every bit as bad *** as a new TRD OR for way less money.

I'll give my 2cents. Sounds like your truck is ready for another 100k without breaking a sweat. That said, maybe you want a new truck. If you're ready and you can get a deal that you feel comfortable with, DO IT!!! You only live once, drive whatever you want. I'd be driving something different if I had the cash, I don't, I drive my very capable, reliable and in my opinion spiffy truck. There has not been a huge change in the line up in 10 years as others have said, aside from some electronics and interior updates. I'm very curious what the "new" gen Tacoma's will be and that will be my decision maker for a new one or a used one but aside from not having cash, I'm waiting on that. I was just happy that they finally built a truck with vinyl floors in 2012.

Thanks for all the responses - it all pretty much solidified my decision to keep my current truck. This was more of a curiosity / tests the waters type thing more than anything else. I'm not one to switch vehicles too often and with my current Tacoma I definitely have a keeper. Now, if the next gen Tacoma’s are offered with a diesel, here in the states, then all bets are off - but I'm not holding my breath.
