Did I overreact and pass up a good deal?

I went to look at a '91 Land Cruiser last night. Cloth with a sunroof and all stock. The ad listed 242,000 kms and an asking price of $6,000. After a few e-mails he told me the brakes need to be bled and he was selling it due to non use. I noticed in the ad the plates were last renewed in 2011. (bought for his wife but she found it too big) He wanted it gone and said he'd take $3,000.... So, of course I get excited and want to take a look. We pile in our truck and drive over to take a peek.... I start walking around it, looked for paint lines, opened the door and notice....MPH.... So, I asked him if the truck was from the States. He replied it was from Sacramento. I promptly handed him back his keys and thanked him for his time. Personally, I didn't like that he didn't inform me that the odometer was in miles. So, now instead of having 242,000 kms (150,000 miles) it actually has 389,000 kms (242,000 miles). The truck was in good shape though. Clean and original. Did I overreact and miss a good deal?

as a side note : the online form for kijiji is in kms. All he did was fill in his odo reading. However he didn't convert it to kms or inform me it was in miles prior to me getting there...

I think you overreacted, I would have used it to try to beat the price down even more.

3 grand does not get you much for a land cruiser in Canada, if it is running and can be inspected/registered with a reasonable amount of work, it's worth the 3 grand (in Canada)

It's important to note that you get a lot less for your money when buying land cruisers (and cars in general) in Canada.

Depending on what you want/need, you might want to wait to find a clean truck from Japan for sale, but you'll be paying a lot more than 3 grand.

I tried that. He said he wouldn't go less than 3 grand. I thought 3 grand for a 21 year old vehicle with 389,000kms (242,000 miles) seemed like a lot money.... Yes, there are a few RHD diesel Land Cruisers around here. About 8 grand would buy one with about 150,000 kms (93,000 miles)....

was it gas or diesel? if it was diesel, I am afraid you missed a great deal.

But coming from Sacramento, it has to be the 2F petrol engine. In that case, don't worry, you did not miss much.
I don't think Land Cruiser prices are going up anytime in Canada with the price of fuel getting higher in higher.

Yeah, it was the 4.0L I-6. I'll hold out for the right one, even if it is a little more.... I'm in no rush as my current vehicle does the job just fine.

While the extra miles are definitely a big surprise, 240k mi isn't used up. For 3 grand, you're getting a California truck, so metal wise, much of may be like a LC 5-8 years newer. It all depends on what you are buying it for. If you're OK with the performance you'll get from the 2F motor, its not a bad deal. I can certainly appreciate your shock and disappointment though.
