diesel Trooper

Hi I am looking at various options for an expo rig build. I am loving the Xj, looking at a ram CTD, and digging the troopers. I see alot of them go for under $4k which is perfect. I was wondering if anyone knows if the overseas diesel is a drop in swap and what would be involved in dropping the 3.1L diesel into the bay of a 2G trooper. I am finding them on ebay for about $3K and figured I could get a non-running model for less than $1K. If anyone has done this swap or knows what is involved please let me know. I think this would make for a great and capable build. Ok 1..2..3..GO!

Best thing I can tell you.... I am pretty sure its been done, at least more than once... saw one on Ebay a while back....

Go to planetisuzu.com, find a member with the s/n JLEMOND... he has worked for Isuzu for 30+ years, and probably, the best source for info I have found.... usually able to locate obscure parts reasonably fast too....

Good luck... had a 2G Troop a few years ago... GREAT rig....

This would be a very interesting project to me. This would mitigate the main detractor for the Trooper as I was choosing a hobby/adv vehicle (cough, fourth)to add to the fleet. I liked the Trooper's ride, size and build quality. I did not like that 4 of every 5 I looked at had a severe thirst for oil. It seems that after about 50K miles most the 3.2 and 3.5 liter gassers begin to use oil and eventually lots of it. A diesel swap could put that question to rest.

As cool as a diesel swap is, it wouldn't solve my second reason for not choosing Isuzu...parts availability. I polled area auto parts stores across the spectrum NAPA to Wal-mart (including the chains with TV jingles) and dealership networks for availability of relatively routinely used parts, fuel pumps, water pumps, hoses, belts, etc. Poor availability of stock on the shelves and comparatively higher pricing of the items coupled with delays to order parts scored negatively for me. I assume sourcing diesel parts would be even more difficult.

If you choose to get a Trooper and swap in a diesel, I’ll be watching very closely. It should be a darned nice rig when you are finished. Good luck!
