Differences between Fuso models

I am starting my search for a Fuso 4X4. I know enough to get me in trouble right now but would like to know enough to make a wise decision on which year model to go with. I was wondering if some of you old timers could share your knowledge on which engines and injection systems you favor and why. Also would like to know what years had problems in certain areas. My plan is to build a truck for roaming around the US and Baja:sombrero:. Not planning on Global Expeditions. Thanks ahead of time, Andy

Rooney,
Fg's are are a rare beast and the older ones were used/abused primarily in the snow belt where they were drenched in mag-chloride and put away wet. I just bought a '91 which has a badly rusted frame and all the fasteners shear off before they loosen. The '05-'07 trucks have a nicer cab, bigger engine, and are only saddled with EGR which doesn't seem to cause many problems and is easy to remove if it comes to that. They also have a pretty clean exhaust stream especially compared to earlier mechanical engines. After '07 you get the DPF and ULS diesel requirement. The exhaust is much cleaner but the DPF adds some complexity and probably a small fuel mileage penalty. The newest 3.0 engine also adds SCR which typically allows better engine tune and better economy than the straight DPF engines. In the case of the Fuso (Daimler) engine there is not much real world reporting yet to know how well this is working out. It is working very well on the larger Daimler engines such as the DD15. I have seen some pretty good deals on '06/'05 FG's not far north of you in IA, and WI lately, low mileage in the $18-$20k range. Of course, if you can find a clean rust free FG of an earlier vintage there's nothing wrong with that other than a little less power and a lower top speed. That's my 2 cents worth.

jhrodd, thanks for the quick reply. I know what you mean about rust, I have found 3 on the web and all of them turned out to be rust buckets. There is no middle ground with these things, either they are shot or pristine and overpriced. Are the older ones all mechanical? Is there any computers running the 90's models?

So Jeffrey, do you know how to remove/disable the EGR and still keep the ECU happy? I would be very interested in knowing how you would go about that.
Sorry about hijacking this thread...

+1 on SkiFreak's request. Would be very interested!

Don't know specifically about the Fuso but it's a common modification here for small trucks and big trucks alike. Some just unplug the EGR valve in the open position and live with a check engine light or remove the valve, leave it plugged in and add a resistor to the delta P sensor. The trucks not going to go limp on an EGR fault. You can also blank it off at the manifold and remove the cooler. They sell kits for the big three diesels here but it wouldn't be too hard to figure it out for a Fuso.

My '91 3.3L 4D31 has a mechanical injection pump and an intercooler. I believe that prior to 1990 the turbo models were not intercooled but I haven't seen enough to know. In 1992 the 3.9L 4D34 was introduced and it has an electronically controlled pump, they also moved the gear shift off the floor and onto a console between the seats. I just picked up the rear half of a '91 FE that was being parted out near Portland, OR. What a difference between a snow belt truck and one from the lowlands. Here's a suspension bolt I just removed from the FE :

The bolts from the '91 FG are too obscene to display in public.

Think of today's emission systems as a organized interconnected collective. Any attempt to modify is considered futile.

It's my understanding that while the late 90's FG do have some kind of computer control of the IP, the engine will still run without that computer hooked up. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. The engine is almost entirely a simple mechanical system with no electronic diagnostics necessary.
