I would like to use either model 1600 or 1800 tent on http://www.activitytrailer.com/ . I talked to one person who thinks i might be able to do without a cargo rack . But , i need to know what the safest distance between the rails would be for either the 1600 or 1800 .

Depending on what gear you want to mount his should be fine, but in all honesty, if you have a drill, they can be put anywhere you want on the for/aft dimension. We have found the current spacing to work fine, but if really needed just a couple extra holes will allow you to put the crossbars wherever you need. "
