DIY truck bed camper

Hello,

I’m in the process of building a small lightweight camper and I’m looking for some advice.

I have a 3rd gen Tacoma double cab short bed that I recently put a Wildtop soft topper onto, then I mounted a generic Roofnest copy hard shell wedge style roof top tent on it.

The previous owner of the tent cut what is essentially a trap door in the bottom of it, with the intention of having a pass through into the underside of whatever it’s mounted on.

I’m looking to make a cut into the top of my Wildtop canvas so I’m able to go from roof top tent into my truck bed without having to use a ladder, but I’m worried doing so will seriously screw up the canvas.

Has anyone done something like this? I’ve read that using a hot blade will make a cleaner cut, then I’m thinking I use some sort of Velcro sided cut up shower curtain on either side of the canvas sized to the opening to cover the hole in the Wildtop. I’m not so worried about it being 100% water and dust proof, but I’d like to protect it best I can

Anyone has any experience with this? I would really appreciate any input!

Thank you!!
