Do FJ40's tow trailers well?

I have a FJ40 Landcruiser that I use for camping, hunting... I have always packed all my gear in and on top of the 40 and have slept in a ground tent. Recently I started looking at trailers and have decided I want on with a roof top tent, maybe an AT? Anyway, my question is how well does an FJ40 tow? with it short wheelbase and all. Does the tongue of the trailer need to be longer?

ANy help, suggestions and photos are greatly appreciated, Greg :camping:

my Yj same wheel bast tows fairly well as long at the trailor is with in reason. I can and do often tow my 18' car trailor with it no problems as long as the lod is light. Where talking long and light. but my 12' tent trailor tows fine.

Technically they are rated to tow 3000 lbs. My experience is limited and with a BJ-42 diesel, but I wasn't comfortable with much more then 1000 lbs back there.

As mentioned, Ed is a good person to talk to.

Scotty, our shop manager, tows a Chaser with his FJ40 so he would be a wealth of information for you. He is burl40 on the Portal.

As with most vehicles your towing experience will depend a lot on what modifications you have made over stock.

I'd start out by recommending electric brakes on the trailer to assist with braking. I'd also recommend discs on the front of the tow vehicle.

Tongue weight should be 10-15% of the trailer weight, if you want to keep it light distribute your heavy loads wisely. Batteries can go behind the axle and a water tank in front of the main box. People tend to load up the tongue of the trailer and then wonder why it's so heavy.

From what I've seen most leaf sprung Toyotas do not have a problem with the rear end sagging when towing. If it was an issue I'd recommend air bags for leveling.

A few thoughts to get you going.
