Do It Yourself Air Tank And Install...Not Your Average Tank!

This is my idea of how a do it yourself air tank mod should go!

For those that do not know I build and love Hotrods. So the other day I was walking by my 55 and noticed the nitrous tank sitting in the trunk, empty, never filled and not hooked up. Bought it and decided not to run it, did 10.9 sec ¼ mile without and thought plenty fast to get stupid! So needless to say it has sat. So I was hit with the thought of converting the tank into an air tank, mountable and ready to air up tires and tools on the trail! This is my story…

Took the tank down to the welding supply and had them convert it from nitrous to co2. They converted the valve and filled her up with co2. I bought a new regulator and hose and was planning on using my mounting brackets I had. I then stopped by one of the 4x4 shops and they had a dandy bottle holder, I liked it so on home with everything I needed for the install.

I decided to place it in the rear area where a compartment is located because it will be out of the way, the footprint will not impede on the main cargo area. I figured I could get rid of the compartment and mount the tank in the space.
This is the compartment all closed up and just waiting...

Remove lid by pushing black plastic nails out, lift lid off...

Next remove 1 phillips screw holding seat belt retainer, push out of way...

Remove vent cover with fngers, pull hard, and locate 2 screws on this side and below seat belt retainer, remove and pull panel out of way. The screws are T15 Torx screws.

I picked this spot to mount the bottle bracket because it offered the most cross beam support to go through, marked holes and drilled them out...

I have a fun odd side so I decided to mount the bracket using square bore marine stainless nuts, bolts, and washers. They look like allen from far but are far from allen up close!

So time to put regulator and hose on bottle, did I happen to mention this tank was fully polished aluminum, thought it would cut down on weight and look kind of cool, I just did not want the off the shelf black and yellow or the drab gray steel, so I did it my way....

So the finished product, also shown is what you will see from outside the Landie when you are walking by. This should be fine because Thursday I have an apt. with my welder and some benders, I will cage in the rear of the Landie for security when trail side and hiking, gear is safe! I will post those how too's when finished.

**EDIT**

Forgot to mention the price...

$45.00 for new valve and tank retrofit and fill with co2.
$82.00 for gauge and hose.
$43.00 for dandy mounting bracket.

Are you having a cage built just around the bottle or the whole area?

Nice job.

All rear windows and a divider between the rear seats and rear cargo area, like a cops car, but not with the negative part associated...the idea is the gear is safe and your head is safe from flying objects.......and I will be building the cages.:)

There is a local fire house supply place here that I can get those brackets from if anybody is interested. They have three sizes. I use it for my CO2 system. These are the roll bar clamps that I use. They are very well made and work great!

I need to modify the clamp that holds the tank to add a lock of some sort.
I bought the ultimate-air set up because I use the regulator for air tools, nail guns, etc.

Anyway, just some more info.
