Do you take a gun with you

I've been reading about a lot of your adventures here and some of the stories about visitors you've had in the night and it's got me thinking/wondering. How many of you take a gun or rifle with you when you're out in remote areas?

Secondly, for someone who knows nothing about guns (I've carried and shot a 9mm while in the Coast Guard but that's it) what type of gun would you recommend?

Hey, that's all that I have carried too, a 9 in the CG. I brought this up under a "survival rifle" thread. I have decided to go with a remington 870 12 gauge with a short barrel. On another note, the CG now uses a 40 cal Sigg.

Occasionally, depending on where we're going.

What do you feel you need to protect yourself from? Any gun can kill anything depending on placement and range.

9mm's, .40's, and .45's are generally used as man-stoppers anymore.

Short-barrelled shotguns are hands-down the best home defense weapon.

Seriously large caliber handguns are generally bought for short range protection against large game.

It generally depends on how much weight and length you want to carry. Mostly, however, you shouldn't carry more than you can accurately shoot. A big Alaskan can make you feel invincible, but if you can't hit the bear with it, you might as well have a hammer.

BTW, if you shoot, shoot to kill! An injured bear/boar/moose/etc will charge out of anger. Injured people tend to sue or press charges...

One more thing to remember, not all the mods are fond of gun threads on this board. Check out some of the shootin' man forums and you'll find LOTS of opinions! :)

Adios.

Do I carry a weapon depends on 2 rules:
1. Where will I be going,
2. If there is an incident, how will it play out on the 6 o'clock news, CNN, and Nancy Grace,
ie., will I look like the bad guy.
Mostly I carry a pump shotgun with bird shot, with buckshot and/or punkin balls in my pocket.
Most important know how to use it be it a firearm or a frying pan.
As said in the other threads, avoiding trouble is the smartest.

I'm closing this thread since we have an active thread of the same topic already linked in post 2. :) I carry when I am on trips near the Mexico border.
