Does GEN III 3.8 uses 93 premium gas grade

Recommended but not necessary according to the interwebs and the mechanic at the local dealer. The engine has knock sensors and will retard timing if it pings due to low octane fuel. HP reduction will occur.

At these current prices. Dump best fuel you can find in her.

Completely disagree. At least in my area Premium 93 octane is 30% more expensive than regular. There is NO WAY you will recover this extra cost in improved efficiency. This would mean that my 18mpg typical '05 would need to go to 23.4mpg to break even. Never going to happen.

Not sure that's a risk I'm going to pay to minimize. If my old knock sensor goes out the ecu will let me know. I did try premium a few times pulling the trailer but my seat of the pants dyno and my mpg saw no effects plus or minus. This can also be altitude dependent too of course. My 87 (at 1100 meters plus) is equiv to 89 at sea level, maybe higher...

That could be a factor, but I'm paying $1.78 - $2.00 for 93 octane!

My point for a vehicle that will see a whole lotta of love - give it the best!

93 octane, Twin Tip Sparkplugs, T6 Rotella and tires - that's worth the increased efficiency. But the more I'm learning, the 3.8L is a pretty efficient by itself.

But let's keep it real, you should not be overly concerned with MPG's if you are driving such a capable vehicle. LC's are far worst, although I love a turboed 1FZ-fe 4.5 inline 6, that's just ballz out fun! But I like almost everything else on the MOnty, most of all is hanging it out like a huge rally car.

Last point totally based on my opinion, premium fuel are better quality, more consistent, with more additives - bigger bang!

But if this is really about getting more MPG's or Power - E85 conversion - Can't wait!

I always use 89 in my '05. Sometimes I use 87, but it runs and idles better with 89 or higher. It pulls so much timing to account for the 87 that it just feels sluggish and noticeably louder. It is worth putting at least 89 into the tank.
