Dual Battery Splitter

Hello All,

Just received a NAtional Luna Dual Battery kit from Paul over at Equipt. I had a question for any of you who are running them with a winch. In the instructions it says to step up to 35mm cable size from the 16mm that comes with it. Have you all been going that large with the cables? Just a question. I obviously want to install this properly without any future headaches but stepping up that much in cable size probably isnt cheap. Especially after the initial purchase of the kit. Any info is greatly appreciated. On a side note I received the kit very fast from Equipt! Thanks

In situations like this several things pop to mind: would you ever be sorry if you did upgrade or could you ever be sorry if you didn't? And my personal favorite: chance favors the prepared mind.

Spend the extra and never think about it again. Don't and you could find yourself in a bad situation. If you need to put the project off for a while to get everything you need, by all means do it.

I just have my winch power leads hooked up directly to my second battery, with no changes to the National Luna system, with no problems.

Personally, if I was running a winch, I would have purchased the solenoid separately along with the heavier guage cable rather than buying the kit.

The kit comes with cables, but the instructions that come in the kit say that the included cables should be replaced with larger ones? That seems to defeat the purpose of selling a kit.

"When all else fails, read the directions." My Dad told me this a loooong time ago and I have found it useful over the years.

I always scale wiring by the total of the rated max loads and add 25%. I expect that the reason for this statement by National Luna is that the winch serving battery will be isolated automatically when the winch starts to draw down power, and the draw from the winch will draw the battery way down. When reconnected for charging, there will be a lot of amps blasting through the cable trying to recharge that battery.

Caleb brings up a good question about the cabling. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I am sure this will come after the fact too, but what the hell.

I would suggest in this instance that you use the cable you have in the kit, and as the instructions suggest, leave the fuse links out of the equation. It is recommended that you wire the winch up to primary battery. The cable supplied in the kit is a very high grade silicone encased cable and should be up to the task of what you are doing.

I have an M12000 Warn on the front of my 100 Series, with a group 27 deep cycle and a yellow top hooked up on this very same system. I have ground it to a halt with enough force to bend 18" diameter Cottonwood trees (plural) during a mud extraction. The cabling was fine.

Is bigger cable better? Perhaps. But I don't think it is necessary for most of the applications we use. Try it. If it doesn't work, change it.

Thank you for the response no matter what the timing! I have yet to install the kit so you are by no means late. I will be doing so with the cables supplied and if there is a problem I will upgrade.:ylsmoke: Again I appreciate the response!
