Earth wind and roll overs

ok so my plan is to put a roof top tent, duh on the roof. I'm concerned with wind. I have camped in areas where the wind gets strong enough to blow freight trains off the tracks. (vantage wash check the history.) anyway has anyone else had this concern? What's a good solution if there is one? Has this happened to anyone?

If the wind is that strong, you're going to find a large natural lee of some sort. If you're exposed to winds that strong, your tent will certainly suffer some damage. I am unsure of the topography of you refer to, but I imagine there are long tracts of flat land. Pitching in such a location would be most unwise. Are there valleys or buttes that could shelter your campsite? Now I see you're from WA, I am from Seattle.

thats true, most of the places i will be camping will be wooded. but for the past couple days we have had sustained 35mph winds and gusts up to 50. it kept me from moving forward whielst i was walking. has any one camped in a RTT thats on the roof in windy conditions? which way was the truck oriented? into the wind, away from the wind?

autohome maggiolina...glacier national park...averaged about 25-30mph, and gusted to probably 35-40mph...

rocked us to sleep. no damage at all. rained, too. no water ingress that we could see.

if we weren't parents of two lil' girls i'd still have it mounted, but ground tenting it is where were most comfy now.
