Family exped truck

LR3 or LR4. In that same category, the Lexus GX470 if you want basically the same thing in Japanese flavor.

All of this assuming you want a newer, fully enclosed SUV.

I have owned a 4th gen 4runner (2003 to 2012) and it is a solid dependable vehicle with 4 lo and good capability. Some better tires and mild lift and you can really go places. We have 200k miles on her now and not a hiccup from the v8 with decent mpg of 20 on the freeway. Japanese trucks are solid, dependable and cheap but just don't have the character or driving experience of a rover. Hence the reason I now own 2 rovers. They take more work but just feel more rewarding. But if you are on a budget and can't do your own work on the vehicle then I would not recommend a rover.

OP said he was a school teacher. Unless you are keen to working on it your self or shelling out money all the time for repairs I would skip the land rover. I have had Jeep, land rover, and toyotas. Between the three I would choose toyota for reliability and resale value, YMMV.

This is how we used our 1996 Discovery - for 16 years! Still one of the best vehicles we have ever owned. Keep in mind that nowadays, these are getting long-in-the-tooth, so expect some required maintenance. Sold the Disco in 2012, and our 1965 109 stepped-up to family hauler status.

Personal mechanical ability is a big factor in vehicle selection, especially older/used vehicles. An honest self-evaluation should tell you where you need to purchase from the perceived reliability index.
