At times, it can be a bit of a challenge to steer kids away from the IPOD and such....on a whim, we bought a simple field microscope before a recent camping trip.
We got this:
http://www.amazon.com/Carson-Micro-Brite-Pocket-Microscope/dp/B000Z3A8UY/ref=pd_sbs_sg_5
It is a simple, cheep kids microscope...but works great for under $15 delivered. We have spent some fun times looking at rocks (is it coral, a rock, a shell), leaves, bugs, fabric, moss, finger cuts, and tree bark.
Can be used with or without the stage...so you can hold it right up to something and see fine detail our use a slide.
General suggestions: if you buy one (of any type/brand) get one with an LED built in light. Makes viewing very easy and provides a well lit image. Get a removable stage, so you can use a slide or just hold up to an object. Get a baggie or tupperware box to hold it and all accessories in to keep it fairly dust free and all the odds/ends together.
