How goes it???... so i FINALLY bought a 89 FJ62 from a friend.. its been sitting for approx 3 1/2 yrs.. bought for an unheard of deal (i think) but i have several questions since im new to this... the new ride has 219,000 miles on the odometer and approx 45,000 on the new motor, bought it from a freind whos father passed away 3-4 yrs ago, he mainly used it to travel down to baja.. he was the original owner.. where do i even begin to start wrenching on this ride?????.. ive already replaced fuel pump and fuel filter since it was bad, changed oil and oil filter,... i have al ist other things that need to be done from interior to exterior to mechanical.. its mainly going to be my weekend warrior to go up to the mtns during snow season to go ride and play in the snow a little bit.. iim out here in the orange county,ca areaand looking for some advice.. once again this is my 1st fj 62 and already loving it even tho i havnt had the chance to put it to good use yet... any suggestions???

heres a list of things i know is wrong with:

1. bad fuel sending unit
2. power windows arent working except for the driver side window
3. power door locks arent working
4. starter isnt working to well (had to beat the starter several times to get her to start)

the window lock switch on the main switch panel on the driver door is broken off and nothing is in that switch area where it is broken off??.. could that be the problem why no power to windows and door locks???

Inspect & or replace all rubber tires, hoses and belts. Replace all fluids (fuel, brake, radiator, trans.,diffs. etc.) and batteries. These are all normally time change items. Inspect electrical system (wires & components). A leak down cylinder check will show if there is excessive wear with the engine (valves, rings, etc.) . . My 2 cents only. .

Good Luck and Congrats on your new project.

Congrats! Epic ride you have there!

Keep it epic and your travels fun by baselining the heck out of it - As stated above - NEW belts and hoses - ALL of them! New plugs (don't forget the anti-seize), cap, rotor, wires. Rebuild or replace that starter! FLUSH the oil, tranny, transfer case and brake system. R&R the diff fluid. Grease every zerk you may find. Inspect all the tie rod ends and u-joints - replace if there is any doubt. New paper air filter, of course.

How are the tires? Brakes?

None of this is as sexy as four working power windows, but having a big, preventable, failure is even less appealing. Make the rig dependable and you will love it. Skip the majors and you will have doubts forever.

Good luck and keep up posted! Pics would be a fun addition to this thread - *hint*

X2 on ih8mud.com that really helped me out on a number of issues I had with my 60. You may have picked it up on mud already but get all of the OEM parts you can afford, when you start with the tune up stuff. I guess every thing for that matter! Do you have a Haynes manual or FSM (factory service manual) yet? FSM can cost some money but the Haynes are cheep and there are good online FSM resources on mud. Good Luck and welcome to the 6X club!

As was said before, I too am pretty sure that it is the window lock switch. My windows had stopped working a while back and shortly after that the lock switch fell out. I opened things up and realised that a broken switch means the circuit defaults into the "open" position. I decided I did not need the lock switch anymore so I soldered a bridge across to complete the circuit permanently. I simply glued the switch toggle back in place for aesthetics. I remember it took a bit of fiddling to do it right but I have not had a problem since.

Good luck and congratulations on the FJ.

Welcome to LandCruiser world and to the cash vacuum that is owning a 60 series. Don't get me wrong once your 62 is up to par it won't need much in the way of maintenance, but once you start modding you may never stop :) Practice moderation and have fun.

All of the above comments should be followed. Also knuckles, get a knuckle rebuild kit and get greasy.

Check the ih8MUD 60 series FAQ (here), visit it often. Don't be afraid to search and/or ask any questions in either forum.

Transmission- Rodney Flush, from ih8mud:

"Here is a full set of instructions to do an Automatic Transmission full flush and oil flow test all at the same time. I have done it different ways but the best way I have set out below:
*Remove the front drive shaft.
*Undo the rear cooler line from the rear transmission union.
*Slid a rubber hose over the cooler line and direct it into a bucket.
*Either drain the transmission using the drain plug or service the transmission.
*Refill the transmission with 1 and a half gallons of transmission oil (Synthetic Recommended).
*Start the car in park and hold it at 2000Rpm for 60 seconds and turn off.
*Measure the oil in the bucket to find out transmission flow.
*Add another gallon into transmission. (Engine Off)
*Restart car and let it just idle until the oil changes colour to a nice clean oil, you will need to ad some oil as you are doing this to keep it flowing. Then shut engine off.
*Refit rear cooler line.
*Refit front shaft.
*Restart car and top up the transmission to correct level.

PRESTO! The easy way by far. Full flush and flow test all in one! Because the very end of the cooler line bend directly down this make everything so easy and removing the drive shaft just make it hassle free. Off to work CYA! Rodney"
