FJ60 Low Gear Bracket

There is a bracket that is located at the transfercase shifter. This bracket looks like it supports the attachment rod for the shifter linkage. But it does something else, it keeps the Hi/Low shifter from going into low range while the t-case is in 2wd. Only lets you go into low while in 4wd.

Any reason why?

I know my old 85 Toy P/u could go into low in 2wd or 4wd.

Pretty common mod, several ways you can do it, I've had 2L on my 40 for nearly 10 years now and I can't rember using it more than a few times. I had a broken birf that I was forced to drive home on, it was nice being able to finish out the trail without pulling the front shaft.

But why did they do it to begin with?

Prevent you from going into 2L? Well under the wrong situations it would be an easy way to break some parts. I can't really think of a modern or old 4x4 that lets you do 2L? At least not any Toyotas. All Land Cruisers (part-time t-cases) have the lockout from the factory. Even the old vacuum 4WD on 60's era LC's forced you to engage the 4WD cable before pulling the low range lever out.

Unless you are doing something out of the ordinary there is really no reason ever to be in 2WD low range. The gate system minimizes the chance that a passenger would be able to knock the shifter into 2WD while driving over rough terrain.

After driving the FJ60 with an auto locker up front and the wimpy stock power steering I can see how useful the 2Lo option would be. It's on the short list of mods for that truck.
