Fj60 vs Fj62

Guys, I am looking at buying a used PS steering box. I there any difference in the parts for an FJ60 to an FJ62?

Cheers
Gregor

Yes, they are different and I can't remember quite what the diff was. IIRC there are even slight differences between the years of the 60, but I think the 62 was all the same.

For retrofitting to another vehicle though- is there any advantage one way or the other? Lets say you had a FJ40 and wanted power steering- what would be the best one to get?

I think it's still vehicle-dependent. I know for my 40 I was looking to put a 6X-series PS in it, although the simplest for an FJ40 is actually a pre-86 minitruck PS.

OK well these are going on Land Rovers so that complicates things a bit I guess. See here:

Gregor did you ask Jim which he used?

I would definitely say FJ60 because there were years of FJ60s but only two short years of the FJ60. I have retrofitted FJ60 power steering several times, it is a great power steering box and feels awesome on the road yet still powerful enough for even 35" tires. It or the Saginaw scout box (nearly identical design, but more common and cheaper) would be the best options in my opinion. Hope it helps! Andre

Andre- is there any advantage to the scout box aside from cost Stronger? different ratio??

The difference is in the mounting pattern, and to my knowledge there are at least 3 vintages, mabey even 4, can't remember right now. They are internally nearly identical, same inputs and output splines too IIRC. If your using it for a swap, use the one you can find :D PS, I have a couple ;)

OK next question. :D

I have a RHD- so just mount it inside the right frame instead of outside the left frame? I think that was what Ike Goss said to do but can't remember...

On a LHD Land Cruiser, the box was on the outside of the frame... So on a RHD rig it would have to be on the inside. However, if you need it on the outside, RHD Land Cruiser boxes are available.

Cool! thanks for the info- It will be a little while before I get into this project so I am in the collect info/parts mode.

While I have your attention- I have been looking for a set of FJ60 axles to use under the LR too, I ran across a set of full floating ones from an Aussie FJ-60 is there a distinct advantage to them vs the regular US spec axles?

Yup, there full-float :D

All of the US spec trucks had a semi-float rear and while they are great axles and can be built for some serious abuse (chromo axles, etc), I'm still a fan of the FF design and the unique features it offers.

Hmmm I'll have to kick the idea around a bit- they'll go under a LR ambulance so I guess the FF option would be worth paying more for. Fully loaded it will probably be over 6600lbs. I can get regular FJ60 axles for ~$100 each locally though and the Full floater set is $650.

Decisions decisions.... :D

The FF housing, hubs and shafts are worth $400-500 around these parts, sounds like a completely fair deal to me :D
