Flip-Pac torsion bar delete?

I've seen some of the torsion bar alternatives posted here. I'm a new FP owner (new owner, old F-P) with a broken bar and missing the handle, and the cost of the parts is high and lead time long. I removed the bar and installed bolts and bushings as pivots, but haven't yet made a handle/support struts. But lifting the lid by hand and with a long 2x4 was not easy and I haven't actually taken it past 30 degrees or so even with my wife helping. So ... my question to those of you who've done this, would you do it again cost no object? Part of me really likes the simplicity, not to mention getting away from the risk of a broken torsion bar in the wild and no way to close the lid. But I'm worried that a slip or a trip and I'll have the lid crash down on the roof and rip out the hinges. Thoughts/opinions? I'd also like to hear from folks who have had no torsion bar problems and would recommend just spending the dollars. I got the F-P cheap so if I get reliable service and function from the T-bar I'm OK with the cost, but don't really want to miss spring camping.

Thanks - dman93

I might be wrong but I thought the torsion bar helps to hold the weight of people sleeping in the overhead part. Those strut rods are to just keep it from bouncing when you move around. I think without the bar you're going to have major issues when you put any weight in the bed. At least that is my understanding and how I have seen them work in person.

That's right Mike, but the folks who bypass the torsion bar replace the wimpy hood struts with sturdier supports (3/4-7/8" tubing or EMT) that rest on the ground or bumper.
