Let me start by saying I planned to have this truck forever, but my wife and I just found out we’re having a baby and the only thing this truck is not great for is getting a small child in and out of the back seat conveniently. That being said, I would like for it to go to the right person and am not in a huge rush to sell.
I know these trucks well as I have had two of them over the last decade. My first was a 96 with the same engine and drivetrain that I built out as an overland rig and my wife and I lived out of on various trips all over the USA. Unfortunately, that truck had been in the Northeast it’s whole life and I was forced to get rid of it due to frame rot. It was devastating - I thought long and hard about other setups that would be as practical for overlanding as well as everyday life and I just didn’t want anything different. I became obsessed with finding another…as close as possible to what I had, but ideally not from any of the cold-weather states that had been problematic for the Tacoma chassis. Eventually, after a few months or so of scouring the web, I found the truck that you are now looking at now; a 1999 with manual locking hubs and 220,000 miles (just through the break-in period!. This black beauty had spent most of it’s life in California, then Texas before landing in New Hampshire where the previous owner had replaced it with a newer one. It was more or less unmodified and hadn’t even spent a full winter in the Northeast. At 220,000 miles, it was just through the break-in period and I couldn’t have been happier. In November 2019, I spent a few weeks swapping all the good parts from my old Tacoma such as the ARB bumper, WARN M8000 winch, Toytec front suspension, ALL-PRO Expedition rear leafs, roof-racks/basket, new OEM steel wheels (to be able to fit tundra calipers) and BFG All-terrains. At the same time, I replaced the drive shaft center bearing and both front axles. I’ve custom fit an aluminum LEER contractor cap from a ford ranger with a wood spacer to account for the slightly shorter bed on the ranger. I was planning on building another sleeping platform in the back (like I had in my first truck)…I have all measurements and plans drawn in 3D (see pic from SketchUp) for anyone interested. I will include the tailgate and hardware. I also installed a keyless entry system which is a game-changer. About two months ago I bought brand new seats from the same generation 4Runner which was a major (and expensive) upgrade to the factory bench OR factory bucket seats that Tacomas came with. The driver seat has height adjustment, lumbar support, AND the ability to adjust the bolsters.
The truck currently has 234,xxx miles on it, that will go up slightly. I am asking $11,500 which will include extra parts listed below. The car is located right off I-95 in Southwest CT. Also listed is more information on the suspension setup, things I was still planning to do, and recent maintenance. Thanks again for looking and let me know if you have any questions (text or email).
More Information on the suspension setup:
- Rear Springs: These are the expeditions springs which provide approximately 3" of lift with 400-500 lbs of cargo. Unloaded, they will provide approximately 4" of lift. https://allprooffroad.com/rear-suspension/95-04-tacoma-rear-leaf-springs.html
- Rear Struts: https://www.toyteclifts.com/33-186542-p-rear-extended-travel-bilstein-shocks-95-5-04-tacoma.html
- All Pro greaseable rear shackles: https://allprooffroad.com/rear-suspension/toyota-rear-spring-shackles.html
- Front springs: Designed for the weight of ARB bumper including winch. https://www.toyteclifts.com/112-620-p-toytec-front-coil-lift-springs.html
- Front struts: https://www.toyteclifts.com/d558-p-...e-5100-shocks-95-04-tacoma-96-02-4runner.html
Parts that are not installed, but I will include for asking price:
- Full set of fender flares from an 02 tacoma (these go for $~400 on eBay!)
- IBS Dual Battery kit including Optima yellow top
- 20 Gallon, RV water tank and 12v water pump.
Things I was still planning to do/needed:
- Repaint roof basket/replace the front Thule roof rack bar (starting to rust a bit)
- I’d planned to swap to a tundra brake setup (calipers/rotors) which was the motivation behind the 16” Toyota wheels, but the current brakes feel great still so I haven’t.
- I never wired up the Hellas since swapping the ARB bumper to the new truck
- Valve cover gaskets - not an emergency, just starting to leak a bit.
- Alignment since new front suspension
- Since it's black, it the paint shows brush marks, and some little dings and dents, but the panels are 100% straight. A proper detail would really bring the paint back to life. I am not obsessive about keeping my truck shiny, so I never got around to it.
