2010/2023 GXV Global Traveller Mercedes 1017A 4x4 Expedition Truck
  • Mileage: 34,XXX
  • Price: $295,000
  • Current location: La Junta, CO.
  • Regular specialist service (most recently September 2024): Full 2025 annual service at my expense before you collect
  • Spare parts included: ~$3,000 worth of spare parts (extra alternator; full engine gasket kit; extra oil filters (approx. 12) / air filters (one) / fuel filters (8) / water filters (8); spare hoses & belts; extra front wheel full bearing set; valve stems; and more)
This expedition truck would be perfect for exploring the Pan-American Highway, with the famously reliable OM352 motor as used in the 3rd generation Unimog. It is extremely capable off road with permanent all wheel drive and a short wheel-base on 47” super-singles with locking rear and center differentials. It has 22” of ground clearance without the complexity of portal axles, and no electronics in the engine — which runs equally well on North American ULSD as well as higher sulfur content diesel usually sold in most of South America. There’s no DEF, DPF or EGR, which massively improves engine life and gas mileage — close to 11mpg on average. It has a turbo charger for easier high altitude starts, and both a diesel hydronic engine pre-heater and an electric engine block heater that can be plugged into the house batteries on especially cold mornings. The sale includes a custom bolt in steel plate to completely block access to the habitat from the cab when, say, shipping across the Darién Gap.

The 2010 alder wood build-out of the original habitat was removed and completely renovated using strong but light-weight honeycomb composite over 2022 and 2023, along with a modern electrical system using Victron and Battle Born components more than capable of running the A/C, the microwave and an induction cooker all at once while the sun is out, but with Webasto diesel cabin air heater and water heating and an outdoor propane cooktop to preserve battery power in case it’s cloudy for weeks at a time.

There is a very functional permanent ladder to climb into the habitat, but also a small slide out deck with drop down stairs that run alongside the truck when deployed instead of requiring another 6’ of clear floor space like most expedition trucks.

What is NOT includes in the sale:
Exterior off road lights. The wires are capped for you to add your own style (easy hook ups). The wires are still active for switching with the included sPOD.
  • Vehicle jack, breaker bar, and tire changing tools

In case you're wondering why I'm selling such an awesome rig?

I was living full time in here with my wife and dog when we noticed that some of the original alder was starting to lose its edge banding, bow with the heat from the old electrical system and beginning to peel away from the habitat box in places. After a lot of research we picked a professional builder to update the electrical and replace or repair the wood where needed, expecting to live in an Airbnb for a few months until we got it back.

As the builder got into the repairs, we realized that a full electrical replacement necessitated tearing a lot of the original wood build out, and it would be more cost effective for a complete tear out and rebuild with light weight honey-comb fiber composite to avoid similar issues recurring in the future. With COVID still holding up the supply chain, and parts needed from outside the US, the few months rebuild ballooned into a couple of years, during which time we bought and moved into house in another state and got another dog.

Our priorities have changed along the way with a regular house to maintain and a regular job to go to, not to mention that my new dog refuses to climb the stairs necessitating a 100lb dead lift every time we pack up to move on when on a trip! My poor back 😂 We've barely camped or gone out in the rig this last year, and it makes no sense to leave such a beast unused, so we're looking for a new owner to take it on the next adventures it really deserves!

DM if you're interested, or ask questions here in this thread and I'll get right back to you.

Here's the original forum post from the previous owner who sold this GXV to me, which has more exterior photos that are still relevant, and also plenty of interior photos so you can see the huge improvements from my total interior rebuild and massive electrical modernization!

Why the increase in price? I've put somewhere approaching another $150,000 into this rig since then and taken care of many of the issues I inherited :)

As before, please DM if you're interested, or ask questions here in this thread and I'll get right back to you.

I forgot to mention that I was unable to register this GXV in California (long story that involved 9 months of visiting DMV, CHP, CARB & EPA for impossible to satisfy inspection certificates), so it continues to enjoy permanent registration inside a Montana LLC.

I would be more than happy to sell the LLC, and you would take ownership of that along with the benefits of getting existing title and permanent registration on the existing Montana plates without actually purchasing the vehicle or triggering a sales tax payment. Otherwise, a traditional sale of the GXV from my LLC to you with a change of title owner and registration is also equally fine with me.

Options!

While I'm actually located in Arizona, the GXV is currently at my mechanic's shop in La Junta, CO after having had a few regular maintenance issues taken care of. Rob Pickering is the owner of the shop, and incidentally was the original importer for the 1017A chassis back in 2010. He is probably one of the most knowledgeable people in the US when it comes to classic German trucks, and after he found a fixed a few small issues caused by previous shops (I had the rear drums replaced in CA, and the shop that did that work didn't properly machine out a notch for valve stem clearance -- Rob immediately noticed and fixed that problem) I have been making an annual road trip for annual service ever since. Thanks to his familiarity with these chassis' the GXV is already in peak condition and runs like a dream.

As I mentioned in the original post, with the truck at his shop in La Junta, he'll happily host you for an inspection and when you decide to purchase will perform a full expert service at my expense so that you have a whole year to enjoy overlanding adventures before the next annual check up and maintenance is due! In the unlikely event that you find any small issues that need attention during inspection, I'll also pay to have those rectified by one of the most respected Euro-truck technicians in the country.

Please DM if you're interested, or ask questions here in this thread and I'll get right back to you!
