Hi everyone.

Long time lurker but first time poster! Due to a growing family I am reluctantly listing for sale my much loved Discovery. I have found it very difficult to price what is a fairly unique vehicle, as we all know a second hand car is worth what someone is willing to pay. If you are interested, please contact me, as there is room to negotiate on price depending on which extras you do, or do not, wish to include in the sale, thank you. Here is the full advert:

For sale is my 1999 Discovery 2 with the Black Paw 4x4 Sahara conversion – the sister car to this one belongs to Sam Watson, experienced overland traveller and writer for LRO magazine and Overland Journal, who selected the Sahara conversion for its combination of comfort, everyday usability and mechanical simplicity.

The vehicle is for sale at £11,000 (ono) including a range of extras and equipment listed below.

This vehicle may seem expensive compared to other 1999 Discovery 2s, and to someone that wants a cheap run around or off-road toy, it would be. However, if someone is looking for a Land Rover that is mechanically reliable, with more space and less rust than a Discovery 1, or more comfort than a Defender, this is a great choice. The professional engine conversion alone is not a cheap thing to have done, add to that the rust free condition of the vehicle and the huge amount of money spent improving it and suddenly the price seems more reasonable.

Sensible offers would be considered, and the price could be negotiated depending on how many extras are included in the sale. I would also consider a part exchange against a Defender 130. I am a motivated seller, so there may be a deal to be had!

HISTORY

The Discovery started life in Australia as a 4.0 petrol V8 before being brought home by the owner when he moved back to the UK. I purchased the vehicle from Black Paw 4x4 in July 2010 shortly after they carried out their ‘Sahara’ conversion, which entails fitting the 300Tdi engine (from a Discovery 1) and removing potentially troublesome electrics such as ACE, air suspension and complex ECUs etc. The vehicle was then upgraded to suit adventure travel and camping; it would make a superb overlanding platform, which was always my intention with it, but a growing family means I am switching to a Defender 130.

All the details are below, and any inspection is welcome, but to sum up this vehicle I would say it is genuinely reliable, almost entirely rust free with a rock solid chassis that has never needed any welding. The brief was always to keep the vehicle mechanically simple, but enhance its practicality with clever little modifications. The vehicle was featured in LRO magazine in May 2012 (a copy of the magazine is included in the sale) and every four wheel drive enthusiast who sees it agrees it combines the simplicity of a manual 300Tdi Discovery 1, with the larger load bay and rust resistant body of a Discovery 2 – the perfect combination in other words!

FAULTS

This is a great vehicle for its age, but it is not perfect. Being honest and critical, buyers should be aware of the following:

  • Like many older vehicles the head lining has started to sag, this is cosmetic only
  • 2 small dents in the bodywork (on the driver’s door and the lip of the bonnet) and the paint lacquer is pitted in places
  • During heavy rain a small amount of water sometimes leaks into the driver’s footwell; the leak seems to be through a cable aperture in the bulkhead which I will have repaired next time I need any work done in the engine bay
  • When I purchased the vehicle there were some minor rips and stains on the seat fabric; I have always had seat covers fitted so this never bothered me

EXTRAS. Included in the sale:

  • Heavy duty fridge mounting bracket that bolts into existing rear seat mounts, replacing the single rear seat and leaving 2 rear seats available for use
  • Custom built lockable aluminium roof box with gas strut lid opening (1.4m x 1m)
  • Land Rover tow bar (not fitted as the receiver hitch is in its place) – solid but with some surface rust
  • Exhaust pipe standard centre section (currently fitted with a straight through centre)
  • Original Land Rover steering wheel (excellent condition)

ALSO FOR SALE. Available by separate negotiation:

  • 50 litre National Luna Weekender fridge freezer in excellent condition (over £1100 new)

I have been searching for a rack like this and love the aluminum finish. I found the Big Country website but do not see any fitment options for a Discovery 1-2. Do you know if this rack was built for a defender and also fits a discovery? Did you have to modify? I am not sure of the difference in the gutter measurements from D90 to DII. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi there. I'm fairly sure the rack is for a D2, but it was already on the truck when I bought it, so I can't say for certain. From memory, I think it measures roughly 2.3m by 1.4m. Hope that helps.

If you buy the rack for £11,000 I'll throw in a free Land Rover! ?
