Forester is Motor Trend SUV of the Year

Motor Trend editors have selected the Subaru Forester as their SUV of the Year for 2014.

The SUV category is very broad. Starting with a list of 22 vehicles, the staff selected 10 contenders for the 2014 prize:
Acura MDX
Buick Encore
BMW X1
Dodge Durango
Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel
Hyundai Santa Fe
Kia Sorento
Land Rover Range Rover
Mini Cooper S Paceman
Mitsubishi Outlander
Subaru Forester
Toyota RAV4

Man. It seems the definition of SUV is changing a bit... I would never consider a Paceman, Encore or X1 as SUVs.

The ones that I have absolutely no qualms about calling an SUV are Grand Cherokee, the Landy and the Durango. The rest, while SUVs, have at least a little cross-over DNA in them.

Motortrends "_____ of the year" is one of the most suspect categories in any Automotive magazine out there. There is a somewhat direct link between advertisers and ____ of the year categories.

Examples
Dodge Ram recieved the truck of the year award in a model that was plagued with problems
Toyota Tundra recieved the truck of year award on a model that was not yet for sale.

I do like the Forester, despite having never owned one. I just question anything that comes from Motortrend.

Motortrends "_____ of the year" is one of the most suspect categories in any Automotive magazine out there.

Keep in mind that MT's awards are not straight-up head to heads. Each model is judged individually on six criteria.
