Freedom Camping in NZ

Hi folks,

we are traveling to NZ in December and have rented a camper. The camper is certified self contained (green sticker).

Now, I'm trying to find out where I can actually camp with this. My first understanding is "everywhere, unless it's restricted or prohibited", either by DOC or by local council.

On the other hand, all the pages I read through also recommend the various apps like Campermate etc to find "official" freedom camping spots.

Can someone clarify?

Thanks a lot!

We were there a year or so back. South Island mostly. It would appear similar to EU. IE lots of parking lots called camp grounds and then when green stickers allow, dispersed camping style. I wouldn’t expect to camp near towns…

This might be useful.
They own many camp grounds for the benefit of members.
