Fridge Size

45 or 60?

Never seen either in person, so I'm trying to figure out what size I will need. I like to go to camping for 3-5 days at a time and bring all food with me (and beer).

Using a tape measure to visualize the interior dimensions the 45 seems like it wouldn't hold a whole lot.

advice please.

I have the 45 but I wish I would have bought a 60. The 45 will hold enough for just me for a few days but almost not enough for me and my 3 boys when we go camping, let alone enough for the entire family (7 of us).

I should say that the food is for me, my wife, and hopefully the kids soon enough. Plus we end up camping with other - less experienced - campers who often don't have the equipment, so we keep food for them as well.

It all depends how much you want to think about packing the thing.
I have a 35 I can pack 5-7 days for myself or around 3 days with the fam (3)

I would go for the 60 based on your needs. I have an 84 qt in my trailer and it holds enough food to support 4 or 5 of us for 7 days. It's nice to have in my set up, but probably too big for most aplications unless you have a lot extra room and don't plan to move it around.

When I purchased our 60 my wife was not happy because of the size. I recently went to trade it for a 45 and she said what do you think you are doing.

Additional space is great and I'm starting to think with the extra thermo mass cooling requirements are reduce with a full cooler. No real data to support the claim but, I often disconnect the power at night with only a few degrees of temp loss overnight.

On most trips we always bring back food with the 60. Just remove the basket and throw it back in the house frig. Nice and easy

Is the amp draw significantly more with the 60?

I have a 2008 Nissan Xterra which According to my measurements would accomodate any 60 fridge with the seat back up (31" between the seat back and the gate). So I'm thinking if I have the space I might as well. But at the same time the 60 is usually a few hundred dollars more.

I agree and often do the same.

You can see the sizes of the 45 and 60 liter fridges at http://www.i-m-d.com/engel/Engel45main.htm and http://www.i-m-d.com/engel/Engel60main.htm

There is a paradigm shift when packing a portable fridge as opposed to your fridge at home.

Your fridge at home is filled with everything that needs to be kept cool.

If we use a 6 pack as an example, I think most of us can relate to that :), in your fridge at home you put in all 6. In your portable fridge you put in two. You pull one out and replace it with a warm one. Rotating the cold one for a warm one.

Using this method you can effectively reduce the size of the fridge you need.

Obviously things like cheese, milk, salad stuff needs to be kept cool all the time, but filling a portable fridge with a 6 pack, 2 bottles of wine, and a watermelon is not good management of space.

If you have a large family or group then a larger fridge is needed just for the essentials.
