Front Brake Rotor Shields

How important are these? I've read a few threads from Ford Truck forums, and it sounds like when they get rusty, a lot of guys take them off and don't keep them off. Will I be alright leaving them off? Otherwise I can spend a couple hours de-crusting and re-painting mine, or spend ~$100 for new ones. Thanks!

We never run them.

When I had a car that was mainly for track events I took off mine and never had a down side. If there are even any on my van and they do get nasty, I'll take them off without hesitation.
Just my experience and opinion...
