When Tina and Dave Payne took their honeymoon in Africa, they didn't get chauffeured to an all inclusive 5 star safari lodge - they hit the road for a three week adventure with nothing but themselves, food and water, good music, and a GPS, in a Front Runner outfitted Mercedes G-Wagon. Tina adds, "We went for days in Botswana and Namibia without seeing another soul. But we traveled completely self contained with many of the comforts of home. It was the trip of a lifetime."
Back in Los Angeles they returned to their "day job" making feature films. But the itch to take another long vehicle based adventure never went away. They decided they wanted to bring this type of travel closer to home and make safari style road trips more accessible to the average American.
They didn't realize the seed was already planted with the vibrant and small but growing community of "overlanders." Tina recalled, "In south Africa where I grew up, it was how we always vacationed. Here it actually had a name!" The couple decided to put their money where their hearts were, and help grow the Front Runner brand in America.
They partnered with Paul May, of Equipt Expedition Outfitters, who was the first to import Front Runner products into the U.S., with the goal of broadening the customer base through creating a dealer network, launching a web based retail store, and educating consumers about overlanding and that Front Runner is the premiere brand for vehicle outfitting.
Front Runner Outfitters is focusing on selling kits to, as they put it, "turn your vehicle into a vacation." Dave explains, "We need to take the mystery out of all these accessories. Outfitting your vehicle is really just camping on steroids." Tina adds, "We're selling vehicle based glamping. All the comforts of home, but all effortlessly and elegantly packed into your SUV or 4x4."
And while Front Runner makes racks and accessories for most 4x4s, including the mainstay Land Rovers and Toyotas, Front Runner Outfitters is focusing their attention on the latest Jeep offerings.
"The Jeep JK is an amazing vehicle for camping and off-roading. And while it's versatile, durable, with a nice entry level price, there's a big problem -- there's not a lot of storage space. So the Front Runner designers in South Africa have been focusing their attention on an upgrade package that will finally make the Jeep functional for a longer road trip."
