FYI: Interesting comparison. 1020 vs. D800

I think one thing to consider is that the lens choice is critical. The Nokia seems to have a pretty darn good one, I'll say that for sure. It's pretty impressive the quality of the photos from that phone, really all phones cameras now can take very fine photos.

I assume when the author says "28-105mm Nikon Macro" he is referring to the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 AF-D, which is a pretty decent lens. But in any case I think even using a good zoom might be a little unfair to compare against a fixed length for some of these tests. It is very rare that they have the overall sharpness and certainly uniformly across the whole frame until you get into the very high end. That has been true for decades and it's a matter of physics.

Yes, but lets compare sort of apples to apples that a lot of users will use the less expensive glass, and running the D800 which is a very very very good DSLR body, It shows how good the 1020 is. By no means will it give the ultimate results the 800 with awesome glass will, but, it will totally hang with the DSLRs with kit glass, and will just be so much better than any other phone.

Absolutely. Those 1020 shots are impressive.

But what exactly is the comparison? To prove how good a 1020 is compared to a high end DSLR? Then use high end glass. Otherwise why not use an entry level DSLR and glass and demonstrate that there's no quality reason to heft one around unless you're going to use it, e.g. not just snap shoot.

Heck, why not see how good a D40 and whatever fixed 28mm fits on it and see how that compares?

I guess I just don't see what he's really proving, he's hamstrung the D800 badly, it's just resolving the distortion of the lens and obviously the Nokia has a good one. OTOH assuming you can mount it, a 28mm f/2.8 Nikkor is super cheap and would probably blow it away.

I believe the D800 will accept old MF lenses and you can get a very nice AI or AI-S 28mm for a $100. There would be almost no distortion like the zoom shows. Even a brand new AF 28mm wouldn't be very expensive, I think $250 or so.
