FYI- Read before you boost your 3.4

I had the TRD supercharger on my 96 with the URD fuel upgrade kit. I installed the URD kit and the supercharger. It was knocking under boost from the start. Only problem was my wideband was reading 11.5.1 fuel ratios and I was still knocking real bad. Called URD and it turnes out in some early 3.4's that were from x production number-x production number had a very major factory defect that Toyota has kept really quiet. Toyota actually produced 3.4's with a slightly bent crankshaft!!! Yes you heard that right, the motor will run great their entire lives UNTIL..... you add boost to the motor. The guy from URD has told me that he has heard of this happening to people and that the source of the problem is a factory bent crankshaft. Only has been found in Japanese assembled 4-runners so far. Since all Tacomas are assembled in the US I did not think it could be true, but after further inspection I dont think my motor is original to my truck. Granted it is very rare, but I just want to let everyone know that this is a problem. It just didnt make sense to me when when I was trying to tune it and it knocked more when adding more fuel. I was told to look at the crankshaft pully at idle. It should be %100 true, but mine, has a slight wobble to it which is the problem. So I took off the kit and it runs great again. Just check out your crank pully before you go even further. Only has been found on early 3.4 motors from 4-runners so far.

That's a new one. My cousin just finished installing a TRD charger on his 96' Tacoma and has been having problems with it for 3 weeks now. Basically after hours of tunning even on a dyno they said that he has a lot of carbon build up on the cylindars that is what is making his knock sensor screw with the charger. I will let him know about this though and maybe that is the real problem. URD never told him about that problem, just that it is very rare but some Tacoma's just don't take to the charger well:D

Yeah tell him to stare at the pully at idle. If it wobbles even the smallest amount it could be the crankshaft. Where did your cousin get his charger and URD stuff? UPS **************** and lost my TRD charger and urd upgrades when I shipped it to a guy in Colorado. Well didnt lose it. They left it unattended on the porch of the reciever and it was supposevly stolen off his poarch. I think the entire thing was set up between the driver and the reciever. They only reimbursed me for $1,500. So needless to say I have been on a mission to find my stuff and take action against whoever stole it from me. So if he got it all as a kit from some guy in colorado let me know, I would like to know who sold it to him.

Wow a wobble huh? Well I have an 02 assembled in Japan. Though my super charged setup will be using a 02 Taco 3.4. So I guess I'm good.

I will tell him to check that. He got his from a guy in Texas, sorry.

I'm tempted to put one on my truck, but it has 155k already on an '01 and hearing stories like this make a man nervous :(.

My cousin just had some real bad turn of events with his charger and his truck but overall they are a great power upgrade.

People put em all the time with great results. I had the worst of the worst luck so I would not recommend it on pre 97 tacomas.

Are you sure your 96' was built in the US? I could swear my 96' was Japan built? I know my 04' is US built, and knock on wood I have had zero issues with my SC, it was installed with 4 miles at the dealer.

That is interesting...

The 3.4L in the T100 can be supercharged (like KC's) but only post-1996. 1996 and previous T100's don't have the right ECU to make the supercharger work. Never heard anything about a bent crankshaft before... but URD would know.

Gadget told me that all Tacomas are built in the US. As far as the ECU's pre 97's are harder to boost because the ecu does not learn as well. Thats why the TRD manuel says to only boost 97-04 models.

Do you know anyone who has a 96' that is supercharged and works? This thing with my cousins truck has got me thinking. We were going to try and slap my ECU in there from my 01' but not sure if the harness will work, oh and don't want to fry it either:mixed-smiley-030: Any links would be great.

Thanks.

If you boost a 95.5 or 96 you need the URD ESC-1. Not sure what it does but its supposed to correct the ecu. I heard you can swap in a 97 computer, but again, the TRD manuel says not to. Go to this site if you havent been there before. www.gadgetonline.com You will find alot of info on supercharged Tacomas and 4Runners. Click on My 4-Runner and go to the bottom of the page. It has all the links down there.
