Garmin Nuvi 650

My wife gave me a Nuvi 650 for Christmas and I was wondering if it will show topo maps when I am on the trail or do I need to add something like the National Geographic topo maps?
Also will the trek now program work in the Nuvi in its original condition or does it need topo maps to run on?
Thanks

in the tools section under navigation then route preference there is an off road button. Any idea what this is?

If I choose offroad and type in a route is does it "as the crow files" connecting the origin and destination with a straight line.... not sure what is is really used for.

Topo maps

Ditto on the Garmin Nuvi 650. I think that the Topo maps need to be purchased on the SD cards or cd's. Garmin's site shows different ones. Broken into zones covering different regions. If you find any tips on how to better use the unit off road, please post or pm. I need all the help I can get. First time GPS user and all.

Thanks,
Tat

as far as I know NONE of the Nuvi products do off road/topo at all. I don't think they will load topo maps and you will be dissappointed in the tracking offroad even if they will load them.

I would call Garmin to double check though. Garmin products that do offroad navigation are the 276/376, Zumo, and handhelds like Rino,76,60 series.

Its too bad because they have great displays and work very well for turn by turn.

Looking at the Nuvi650 owners manual, I don't see any restriction regarding Topo maps. It seems to indicate new maps can be loaded and is supported by the Umbrella Mapsource software. It seems logical that the Nuvi can then display Garmin Topo maps.

That being said....any reference to Topo maps is conspicuosly absent in the documentation. I would suggest confirming with Garmin support.

I went over to Groundspeak and did some searching.

The Nuvi 650 will support Topo maps but does not drop a breadcrumb tracklog. :-( the Nuvi 750 does support track logs and displays them on the map so you can follow that back to where you started.

For the 650, you will need to manualy drop waypoints on the way in if you want reference points to follow back out.

The nuvi 650 is an autorouting gps. There are no Garmin GPS's that are
capable of autorouting the OBCDR to my knowledge. We rely heavily on
track logs. If the Nuvi 650 can access a .gpx track log file on the SD
card and convert it to a route then our offroad products like the OBCDR
will work on the device. I believe you will need to turn off the
recalculate function or the GPS will attempt to reroute the route based
on it's map content and will wipe out the newly created route because
the map detail is not complete enough to autoroute the route. I know
that the Zumo 550 will work in this fashion but I don't have any
personal experience with the Nuvi products. Maybe you should contact
Garmin and see if the Nuvi 650 can convert routes in the .gpx format
from the SD card to a route on the Nuvi.

Routes 3, 4 & 5 are on the CD.

The Garmin Topo is the only one that I am aware of that will work on the
Garmin GPS.
> 4. Is the Garmin topo on there website compatable with your product?
The Garmin Topo product would most likely display most of the sections
but again, none of the Garmin instruments can autoroute this detail.

Nat Geo Topo! map detail cannot be loaded to the Garmin GPS units.
> 6. What kind of waranty do you offer if any?
We fix any problems with our routes, waypoints and track logs or refund
your money after return of the original CD.
> Any other info you can offer would be very helpfull
Our products work best with GPS units that can support multiple track
logs. If the Nuvi can support multiple track logs stored on the SD card
and these .gpx tracklogs can be converted to a Route on Nuvi it should
work. Sorry that we cannot test every GPS instrument. The best Garmin
units for offroad travel are those that support multiple saved track logs.
