gas problems

I've got a gas problem, when climbing with a load it runs out of fuel. I replaced the fuel pump, same problem, replaced fuel filters do nothing. Finally I cut open the fuel tank and the pick up is in the rear so it should be sucking fuel when climbing. I am checking for any kind of crimped or plugged fuel line. The last 4 months I've run with a jerey can with a fuel line jamed in it on the roof rack or stapped to the front bumper and it runs fine. Some people might feel this is unsafe but I live in the highlands of New Guniea where getting eaten is about as high on the worry scale as blowing up or burning to death. I am contemplating cutting a 200liter drum in half sideways, welding it back together and using it as a roof tank with baffles on my sturdy rack. Then I have good gravity flow when the pump fails right? I pretty much always have jerey cans of fuel on top anyways and the tank is totally chunked up from smashing on rocks and ruts underneath. any ideas?

With 1/2 that effort I would think you could properly resolve the issue. Fuel systems just are not that complex. Perhaps retracing your steps from the engine back, looking at every single hose, connection, and component will yield the solution. Not sure about parts availability there, but it sounds like a new tank is called for. If it is beat up, perhaps you have debris making it's way to the pickup under certain conditions.
