Gen 3 Montero ARB/Fog light install ?'s

So I have my front bumper off and it looks like there are factory plugs for the fog lights. I don't have the OEM fog light switch in my Montero. It is an XLS model and I think the Limited models are the only ones with the factory fog lights.

Does anyone know where the switch should be located? How about if the factory wiring is tucked in behind the dash somewhere? I am going to follow the factory plug back but need to know where it switches to. Thanks.

Good news and bad news for you, Bjorn. Like my XLS, the wires are all there and even run behind the dash. The bad news, the factory switch is actually on the stalk where you control your headlights. Very spendy part from the dealer as you have to buy a whole new stalk. The good news, wiring into a generic switch is pretty easy. Better news, you can pick up a factory looking switch from the dealer for that "almost" factory look, though I don't think any of them actually fit any of your blanks. I opted to just go the after market route as it was easier to wire up. It only took a couple of minutes to do.

Not so fast

Well my 02 limited has the OEM fog light switch to the left of the steering column in one of the blanks.

I do stand corrected. I am going off the owners manual for my '01. I did not investigate it too much. I know the dash didn't change, so the switch should work in that blank. I would say I hate it when I'm wrong, but it happens so much that I'm used to it now.

No worries Aaron. These are fun things to tinker with anyway. I'll see if the dealer has the switch and how many arms and legs it will take to purchase one... :sombrero:

Thank you for the picture. I'll have to stop down at the dealer and see what they want for one of those. I wonder what the factory wiring is rated at amps wise? Anyone know?

I'm reasonably sure that the switch activates a relay that powers the lights so no worries on the amps, as long as they aren't rated at a ridiculous wattage. You might need the stock relay as your slot for it might be empty.

All Limited had fog lights I think so you could try these guys:
http://www.sharpautoparts.com/ (in your zip)
http://www.apexautomn.com/ (13 miles away)
http://www.eliteautoparts.net/ (37 miles away)
http://www.riteawayauto.com/ (48 miles away)

I usually search for some easily identifiable (front diff 4.3 for Limited no other car had it.) rarely used part in this case front differential. Check if any one of them had the car/dash. Sport Limited had same switch I think as well. 2002 or 2001 doesn't matter.

Usually use car-part.com which checks the closest yards also. Looks like most of the yards use it for inventory management.

Might use the factory switch but reading in the manual it says that the "fog lights" will not run when you have high beams on. I want the ability to run the HID lights with the high or low beams. I know that the switch itself does not control this. Not sure how easy of a fix it would be but I am thinking that it is a major PITA to figure out. So I might have to run new wiring anyway. Already bought a switch for a couple of bucks. No biggie.
