How do you guys get a vehicle ready (tight) for washboards and such? I will be replacing the OEM steering damper with Old Man Emus and figure to tighten up othe things while I am at it - shock bolts, caliper bolts, battery down, and ?.

My vehicle is the 1995 FZJ80 LC.

I will be heading up to Death Valley next week. Thanks in advance.

Battery cable clamps... I know that Ractrack Road has shaken the clamps off the battery posts of more than one 80-series.

Don't forget stuff inside the passenger area too.

Have fun!

Check all the nuts on the third members.

The washboards are also really rough on the side mirrors.

Alan, can't think of much more but what everyone has mentioned. Some of those roads will take perfectly snugged nuts/bolts and loosen then while in route, so it's a good idea to take 5 minutes and check around the truck at camp each night. Have fun!

Alan, I've had the heater control valve on the PHH side crack and leak fluid, battery terminal clamp sheer, and valve cover bolts go missing and loosen all due to DV and its volatile washboard roads. Main thing as everyone has been stating is give the cruiser a good pre and post drive inspection. I usually aired the Toyo's down to ~20 or so... how are they treating you? Have fun and be safe.

Thanks for all the replies. D, the Toyos are awesome and I know they will be great at DV since its been there. Dave, well, I'm finally going since we last talked about it and I get to finally use the Trasharoo I bought at the last SC80s M+G. I will be leaving tomorrow!

I'm a bit late here.

I have done a trip through the Death Valley at 2011 - not that detailed i like to do it, but we spent some time there.

We dont saw washboard who was worth to consider a special way of preperation - we had an suburban rental.

But - we dont see everything of the DV...

Another tip that I have found is that when driving on an ascent with washboard, I will go ahead and engage 4wd even if not necessarily needed. This seems to cut way down on the wheel hop on the rear wheels, minimizing vibration.

Land cruiser? You'll be good like above suggest. Explored DV with my wife in a 1990 Range Rover classic once. Bloody thing died up one of those canyon trails, turns out some relay under the front seat was stuffed, it was the relay to the EFI system. Never can tell what that place will do to you. The even more important thing is to have survival supplies.
