Family arrived this weekend from the UK bearing my belated birthday gifts.....

I got a couple of the low top SA ammo boxes from APB Trading :wings:

They have plenty of this size in stock but haven't been able to get the hi-top versions for about 12 months.

I'm going to see how much it'll be to ship a couple more over... and yes the plastic clips are rather poor.... however, bearing in mind the origional intended use (ammo) I'm not surprised as they'd be a disposable item. Looking at the box I think it'll be quite esay to get an overcentre clip to retrofit in place of the plastic ones.

An alternative would be to screw/rivet a small plate over the top of the slot where the clips fit in the lid... this would stop them coming out & getting lost.... cheap & easy to do.

Love these boxes... took six on our Africa Overland trip and they did well. Only issue are the clips which, in hot weather, tend to get brittle and snap. Get a few spares...

Wolff Boxes.

I prefer to use more durable, cheaper boxes from Plastor: http://www.plastor.co.uk/contents/p...co.uk/contents/pages/pages_plastor/index.html

Loads of sizes to. Wolff boxes are fine, but I still dont understand why people rave about them... sorry.

After spending the last 10yrs working in the UK food industry prior to emigrating to Canada, I've seen my fare share of trays, totes, bins & boxes. These are as durable as any I've used (my last company had about 3000 of them) and I'd say that the lids are a little more rigid than most food production use types. One thing that does stand them out is the reinforced corners with tie down holes.

In the end they were easy mail order (for me)... and ex-stock. Maybe for UK residents getting other types is a better option.

Thanks for the link - I've just bookmarked it.

I agree with you; I think the SA ammo boxes are god but highly over-rated and grossly over-priced. They have enormous flaws in not being water/dust proof, having a huge amount of wasted space from the castellated corners (yes, I do understand that that is what gives them their strength) and having weak clips - not a problem in their original role sine the boxes were made to be disposable, but deplorable in an overlanders' box marketed as near-indestructible. I certainly don't understand why they cost over $10 a piece - there is no way the SA government would spend more than a few dollars on such a box. Yet again, the expedition/4x4 traders are ripping customers off (have you compared the prices of awnings from Howling Moon and Hannibal with those of the similar size and quality Fiamma units?).

The real clincher for me is that I want to fit a false floor in my Land Rover load bay to allow secure storage of plastic boxes and to allow me to walk over them or store things above them, and the SA boxes are too tall to allow that false floor to sit level with the wheel arches. Obviously, that's not a factor for other users, but I fail to see the hysteria around these boxes when mid-sized UK MoD steel boxes are better shaped and more durable at half the price...
