Going to the Baja 1000 in November?

Anyone planning on going to the race in Baja this November? It might be fun to have a meet and greet somewhere along the way to share a beer and discuss places to view the race from. I'll be coming down from Alaska, but I haven't been to the race for 15 years, so I'm pretty unsure of where good viewing spots might be these days. It might also be fun to spend a day or two exploring with like minded van folks.............Arctic Traveller

I'm planning to head down again, 95% chance we won't race again this year but rather pit for another team. Loop race this year so there should be some options to see the fast cars a couple of times.

I will be there- racing class 12 with Highlander racing. Not sure of my exact plans, but I should be down there for at least 4-5 days.

I've driven in just about every class over the years. Last year we got 2nd in Class 6 (7200 - V6 unlimited trucks) the year before I raced in Trophy Truck. First win was in 1991 in a 5-1600, the last win was in 2008 in Class 12 SCORELite. Won the 1000 and the 500 that year in the 12 car and got the class championship - finished the 500 10th OA with just 5 Trophy Trucks and 4 Class 1 cars in front of us, not bad for a little air cooled 1835 VW beam car.

This year's plans are not firm yet. I'm selling both of my race cars and cutting back - it is not as fun as it used to be. An overall win would be the highlight of a career, but that is pretty much out of the picture. I can't remember the last time the winner wasn't a "Trust Fund Kid". Sport has gotten way to expensive; not that it hasn't always been, but the last several years have really skyrocketed. My solo efforts to LaPaz and Cabo will always be highlights of my life.

Just the other day, I got out the helmet I wore in 2007 when I solo'ed to Cabo in my single seat 1600 car. I was showing it to a window salesman who pits for the McMillin family. The helmet was signed by Mark McMillin who has OA'ed the 1000 4 times and many other OA winners and legends of the sport. Think of a famous racer that was still alive in 2007 and they signed it. I covered it up during the race to protect it - I had it on for 53 hours alone in that little car and found myself talking to those legends riding along with me when I needed encouragement. I got all emotional showing it to him, just as I am now.

I can't express how much racing has cost me, in every sense of the word, and how much it has paid me back as well.

Didn't you get that helmet signed at the Long Beach event in '07? Great place to get a lot of the old timers all in one place. You're smarter than dirt! :)

Ok, sounds like there will be a few folks from here going. Since it's been so long since I've been there, can anyone recommend a place where we might camp for a night, share a beer, and watch the race? Since it's a loop this year, perhaps a couple places so we can catch em twice.

This is going to be fun...............................Arctic Traveller

Course has not been announced yet, except that he mileage is going to be 920 miles which is ~200 miles longer than previous loop races, which suggest the need to go to San Felipe or farther south on the pacific side than usual. I like to watch at Ojos Negros, Hwy 3 Km 71? road crossing, the area before the summit and then cross over to the coast - but I don't even know the rotation this year so it would be hard to plan anything.

We'll be there, as with many here it is a highlight of our yearly Baja adventures. We've plotted out hypothetical courses looking to approximate the milage, but it is all guess work at this time. We're not racing this year so it will be a much more relaxing time. Our current thought is to watch somewhere near Catavina, maybe camp at El Marmol or out at fish camp.

I am heading to Gonzaga Bay Nov 3rd through the 9th and didn't realize it was the week before the SCORE race. I have heard there may be pre-runners that week before. I don't have any real plans other than doing some kayaking and fishing on the bay and visiting Coco's Corner. The course I saw on BajaNomad shows them coming down the pavement on 5 and then cutting across to Coco's Corner. Hoping to see some race trucks but also want to stay out of their way on the trails.
