Note these are refubs, most likely ex-police units. These go new for upwards of $4k. Specs arn't the latest and greatest, but would run any mapping program, is mil spec shock and water resistant, and has a touchscreen you can see in daylight. Price looks to be thru the end of the month, and use code FREESHIP for free shipping. Im on the fence personally, but may pull the trigger.

I did a quick search for "refurbished toughbook" and nothing that came up in the first couple pages beat that price.

I "read" that its not that difficult to swap out the HD. It pretty much pulls right out and the HD case accepts just about any notebook HD. This is all new to me so chances are Im wrong.

The price is great....good luck getting one!

They just work without any problems. I use them for my travels, races and for work...

The latter being from my ongoing series about what a Toughbook can endure.
You should only do it though, if you have the rubber keyboard!

About the hard drives. It takes any model but you should really check the list of recommended hard drives from Panasonic. They have fully approved (rather expensive) and a set of approved that will do fine. It doesn´t help you having a go-anywhere notebook and then the vibrations kill your harddrive.

When travelling I have all my maps on sealed external harddrives.

And one more advise. Take out the optical drive when driving offroad! The heads may crash. It happened to me in Mongolia, when I forgot to take it out again aftr burning backups the night before.

So long,

Robert

You say take out the optical drive... If its not in use while moving, why the need to remove it?

Ive been searching, and have found some info... But nothing that cements the answer to my question....

Will the CF29 support a SSD? If so, which one? I think Ive gotten as far as needing an IDE ATA drive... but thats all greek to me.

Any of these should work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150636 1421530855&name=PATA

I wouldn't go smaller than 64GB if you want a usable amount of space (yes, I realize that the price of the SSD is about the same as the ToughBook).

Also, if you're picking up one of these, be sure to do an upgrade to max out the RAM. These things are OLD and will need the maximum supported amount of RAM to run any modern software.

Thanks....

Ill see how she works when it gets here. Im not all that interested in a fast notebook. Just something that can handle nav functions and store pictures while exploring.

Perhaps a faster HD would be a better investment than an SSD?
