Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor 255/75/17 or BFG 265/70/17 or ....?

Hello -

I an in the market for new tires, my current P rated 265/70/17 Nitto Terra grapplers have served me well and have lasted over 45K miles and still have a bit left. So you may be wondering why I am not getting NTG's again, well I haven't ruled that out. I want to move to a LT tire and I'm curious to try something different.

The two sizes I am considering are 265/70/17 (31.6)and 255/75/17 (32" -which there are far less choices). I'm thinking I want to go with load range C or D. I drive the vast vast majority of my miles on road with several trips a year to the snowy mountains and I want to have decent to good off road capability (mud is not a priority).

The candidates from searching around here:
-BFG AT/KO's LT 265/70/17 load C ($180/tire)
-Nitto Terra Grappler same size, the problem is either P rated in this size or I have to go with E load rating to get LT. ($140 P rated or $180 LT, E rated)
-Bridestone Revo's - same issues as the Nitto's

and the dark horse:
-Goodyear Wrangler silent Armor - 255/75/17 ($130/tire ON SALE! )

I was pretty much set on ordering the BFG AT's this morning, until I saw the Goodyears at what appears to be a smoking deal. So what are your thoughts? I really appreciate the input!

Some you mention are snow rated, some not. If that matters to you. It does matter legally in CA and CO as far as snow chain restrictions. The Nittos are not snow rated.
I would not use a D if it's weight rating is well above the weight of your truck. Some popular size LT D's are available with different weight ratings within D. In an AT tire it seems unlikely that a P tire would have substantially worse side wall that a LT.

I have both the BFG AT and the silent armor. I can't compare directly, but both are excellent in wet and snowy. Like the Nittos there a bit of road noise, but not bad at all compared to MT. You do not want to put an E rated tire on a 4runner.

I have had 275/70 R17 Silent Armors on my 2004 4Runner, for 70,000 miles (Load Range C). There is about 2000 left, before reaching the wear bars in the outer tread lugs. They have been great. None of the A/T's are designed to cut through deep snow BFG A/T's included.

The SA's have worked well on wet rocky trails, shallow muddy trails, snow packed roads, and wet highways. There is a tiny bit of road noise, but not as much as the BFG A/T, since the outer lugs are spaced closer together.

That price is really good for that 255/75R17. Is is just a little shorter than the 275/70, and it will fit nicely in the spare tire location.

I just ordered the Silent Armors!

For install next week.

5-255/75/17 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors, I called my local Discount Tire and told them about the outstanding Tirerack price. They quickly agreed to match the price (including shipping), and I placed the order. With price match, and $15 per tire mounting and balancing I'll be at ~$830, pretty good in my opinion.

Thanks for the input, I'm excited. :victory:

I have the silent armors on my F350. I've only had them for about 400km all of which has been on pavement or a gravel driveway so I can't really comment much on them. The winter rating the price and the treadwear guarantee is why I picked them

I also recently put the Wrangler Silent Armor tires on my 09 WK Grand Cherokee. I also looked at the Firestone Destination AT, Michelin LTX AT2 and Bridgestone Revo 2. I did not consider either the BFG or Grabber AT2.

I picked the SAs based on reports from off-road users who found them to be very good off-road while still offering excellent on-road manners.

There is currently a $100 Goodyear rebate offer to TreadLightly members on any Goodyear Wrangler (4) tire purchase, including the Silent Armor. The membership cost is $25, a net $75 rebate for those who are not members.

We moved from the BFG All-Terrain's to the Silent Armors and I think when they're worn out, I'll get another set.

We went with a Load Range E for the 10 ply rating and I couldnt be happier with them. They're much quieter than the BFG's and absorb alot of road expansion crack noise.

We've put about 50,000 miles on them which is supposed to be their trad life and there still is quite a bit of tread left.

They're great in snow, good in sand when aired down, but I've yet to try them in mud or anything really nasty. I'm thinking you'll like them alot
