Got the Montero bug need help

So I've been thinking I need to try a Montero sport. I like the looks of the mid 90's but also 1999-2002 . I know nothing about these rigs. But I've been reading up some here and elsewhere. What should I be looking for on each. Or maybe which body style should I look at for a full build.
They look to be very capable and looking at mileage they look to be strong runners !
Please give me some guidance.

Thank you

97-99 MS had rear leaf springs and I believe the Limited models have available lockers as a option. The 2000-2004 switched to a rear spring setup and Limited and some XLS models had a Hybrid LSD option. 97-00 had the true 4wd option to switch from 2H/4H/4L while 01-04 had AWD option only.

I bought my 2000 XLS 4WD 2 years ago and its been a awsome truck. Its not a hardcore offroader..but I have done several offrail runs here in Florida and it did pretty well in the mud and soft sand. Would of preferred to 3.5L in the limited..but the 3.0L is ok, but could use a little more HP, but its better MPG compared to the 3.5.

I have actually been looking to sell my MS if I come across a nice Gen 2 or 2.5 as I am looking to get into something bigger. MS are capable off roaders and reliable...very happy with mine.

So funny how you never think of something's , then you see it and say oh yeh!!! The Montero is a Pajero ...I knew that one. But I never realized it was also a dodge raider !!! I completely forgot hoe much I loved these 80' s boxes !! Talk about efficient use of space. Short and narrow , I bet these would work also . I'm thinking that they might be under powered, don't know but I'm never in a hurry anyway while on the road.

Find a 01 3.5XS: coils, safer, light, simple t-case/4wd. The 3.5 with the 4.90s in these Sports is lively and it's nice to have the power on the highway.

or a 99 limited with the 3.5 and locker (rare).

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Take a few on test drives, try the Montero as well. The Sport is based on the Mitsu Pickup and the Montero is the Pajero obviously, they are very different vehicles. The sports are much lighter and SPORTY! both are great rigs though. I live in the east valley if you happen on one you'd like to look at out this way feel free to stop by or come try any of mine.

Thanks toasty !!! I'll be back in AZ in about ... Well may for expo then stay for a few months I think. May just take you up on that. I'm thinking a 3.5 sport is probably best. I saw one on here not to ongoing ago. No mods just a very nice looking stock sport.
I just can't get that box out of my head tho .....

I meant the normal Montero Diesel because that just goes and those trucks are legal in the states now.

Ty , I've been doing some reading and yes the V6 would be the way to go. Although if there was a diesel around to be had that might be awesome. Have not seen anything about them. Anyone know where to look ? Ahhh GOOGLE :)

There is a beautiful silver one for sale in Elizabeth Colorado. It's sitting in the Safeway parking lot. If I were near, I'd get the phone number.
