Happy Birthday, iPhone! Steve Jobs announced the original iPhone during his MacWorld keynote speech on 9 January 2007, just 5 years ago. Apple started with no experience in telephony products. Today, the iPhone is iconic and ubiquitous, and a big reason why Apple is among the world's most valuable companies.

What do you think smart phones will be like 5 years from today?

I think in 5 years phones will have killed off basic point and shoot digital cameras and all but the most specialized mp3 players. Blackberry will be for all intents and purposes dead and Microsofts involvement will be limited to making apps.

Storage capacity will level off as faster data connections and cloud storage make it a non issue. Obviously processing speeds and the like will increase and hopefully become more efficient, as well as an increase in battery capacity.

Screen size has nearly reached its limits...some of todays phones are already seriously big...unless men start carrying purses in the next 510 years I just dont think they will get much wider...thinner perhaps but no wider or taller.

The downsides are going to be an explosion in viruses and trojans aimed at mobile operating systems. Security is already a weak spot and with only 2 or 3 operating systems left on the market with a massive instal base its only a matter of time before this becomes a very big problem.

Ive been using smartphones since the Palm Treo and the pace of change we are currently seeing is incredible. I think a lot of credit goes to the iphone for invigorating a previously dull market.
