A friend sent me this link: https://www.truckhouse.co/
I don't know how they get the weight down given it's size, especially when they call out heated floors, wet shower, etc....this has got to be 1500+, once loaded down with humans and gear is going to be significantly over payload.I have been waiting for someone to fill in this niche. So many building off the full size platform, where these trucks are a much more manageable size on tighter terrain. I have never felt more confident off road then in my Tacoma. But then my camper build is under 500lbs. I think this would be an amzing concept if they could manage to lighten the overall weight.
I agree that the drivetrain and suspension (even if beefed up) is going to struggle here, and the long term reliability that Toyota usually comes with will be impacted.
I think it's beautifully designed and has the "cool" factor nailed down for sure. The price tag though.... wow.
+1, properly loaded fullsize is going to perform much better overall than an overloaded midsize. If it was on a Tundra or F150 it would be very legit and still just as capable, if not more.
You are correct as far as I know, there are so many things that go into payload ratings upstream from the rear axle and frame, like front axle, tcase, trans, engine and brakes that would have to be re-designed. The manuf test and their legal team puts stamp of approval on the ratings....I don't know how or who could re-establish those manuf weights unless they decide to take on a lot of liability. With the Frame mods can they retest the truck and have a new payload number assigned?
I don't believe that is the case and the mods would not change the factory rated payload rating...
I don't know that it improves on anything that a full size platform can do. The camper sides and flared fenders negate the width advantage and full size trucks can be optioned at pretty much the same overall length. I think the only niche this would fill is a camper for Tacoma fans.I have been waiting for someone to fill in this niche. So many building off the full size platform, where these trucks are a much more manageable size on tighter terrain.
