Head Removal on V10 E350

Unfortunately it has come to my attention that I am not only burning some oil but also coolant. I need to do the head gaskets on my V10 E350. This is a 2006 with 4WD. I am curious if any of you out there have successfully done this without pulling the engine or removing the body. I have done injectors on a 6.0l without pulling the engine or the body(we did loosen the front body bolts and flex it a little).
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Couldnt you simply remove the motor mounts and lower the engine in the chassis versus yanking it out or taking the body off? You have to unbolt the motor mounts anyway if you yank the engine. Personally, if mine started burning oil i would remove the engine and rebuild it or buy a reman to put in.

There's a sub section for vans at the Ford Truck Enthusiast site.
I believe I recall seeing mention of head removal tricks on there, that should ally to the V10 as well maybe.
The folks are very helpful.
I seem to recall something about using rubber hose to hold up a couple of the head bolts in order to slide the heads out.

The first problem everyone runs into on the V-10 is that the valve covers wont lift up high enough to clear the timing chain and gears since they are overhead cam modular engines. Head bolts are secondary if you cant get the covers off to access the head bolts. Removing the motor mounts will allow lowering the engine down. of course you need to remove the radiator hoses so you dont break the plastic radiator, and you need to insure that the cooling fan doesnt hit the radiator while your lowering the engine. Transmission lines could also be an issue as well as the exhaust Y-pipe. But all of those things must be detached anyway if you yank the engine out so no biggy unhooking them to lower the engine.

Interesting side note i thought i would throw your way about an experience i had with my v-10. It started burning oil for no known reason out of the blue. I hadnt payed particular attention so as to notice right away, but the A/C vents started acting up at the same time. Then i went on an extended trip of 1200 miles and midway the oil light came on in the dash. I stopped at a gas station and checked the oil and it was like 4 quarts low and i just had the oil changed before i left home. Long story short, the vaccuum canister that is attached to the heater plenum went bad and it not only caused the vents to malfunction, it caused the PCV valve to malfunction and it was sucking oil out of the engine and dropping it in the intake stream to be burned. I replaced the vaccuum reservoir and the oil burning stopped. Just thought i would share that, it was quite odd and not something i had ever run across before.

Now that's got me wondering Imbecile...
I get oil lost and a smell at times and can't find it...

Just thought it was worth a mention. I also replaced the little oneway inline vaccuum valve. I suppose you could do a test by finding that vaccuum line on your firewall or engine and simply plugging it off for a period of time to see if it has any affect on your rig. Dont ask me how it caused the PCV to malfunction because i have no idea, all i know is that once i replaced the reservoir and the little oneway valve the oil loss stopped. I drove to California and back home, then took a trip to portland oregon and back, never lost a drop of oil. Yes i also had an oil burn smell, but it didnt sit there blowing smoke out the tailpipe. Regardless it all stopped when i replaced that vaccuum reservoir to my amazement. Added note, be careful removing the PCV valve from the valve cover, if you break that plastic insert in the valve cover you will have to purchase an entire valve cover because they dont sell just the insert. By the way i also bought 3 PCV valves thinking that the PCV valve itself was the problem. Check for any vaccuum leaks, like a cracked line. If i recall there was a vaccuum line on the F series pickups that was causing this sort of an issue also.

I was in the same shoes you are, i thought i was gonna have to yank the engine and have it rebuilt. So i resigned myself that i would start saving money for a rebuild but in the mean time i needed the AC vents to function properly because my dog goes with me everyplace and it was just to hot for him inside the truck even with the windows down. Anyway, im not saying that is whats causing your oil loss, im just sharing what i experienced on mine. My truck had like 75,000 miles on it at that time so i was baffled as to why it was losing oil already.
