Got a question. I am not really looking for a camper trailer like an AT but rather something I can throw some camping gear in and haul a couple of canoes. canoe length could be anywhere from 12' to 17' any suggestions?

Thanks

How much offroading do you plan to do with it? Those long canoes on a trailer are going to make your turniung radius pretty wide.

Not much offroading per say but getting back to some of the put inns can be rough. For the most part I can usually drive straight in. The long boats won't be the big problem as they dont get used in whitewater where the roads are bad.

Something like an M416 or something similar with some Thule / Yakima cross bars mounted to it might work for your needs. That way you could throw the gear in the trailer and the boats on the cross bars.

A 416 or 101 will be too short to accommodate the 12-17 foot canoes as both trailers are sub 10 feet. The 416 is 108.5" to be exact. There needs to be at least 3 feet between the bow of the trailer and the rear of the vehicle to allow for articulation through driveway dips & the like. Take it from someone who has punched out camper shell back window with a 17' Jensen.

ive thought about a m416 and then making the tongue extendable to accomadate the boats. just wish I could find one that was reasonably priced for a school teachers budget.

Something 4x8 and put a rack on it for the canoe. Maybe a long tongue or expendable tongue for the 17. Anything shorter and it is going to be hitting the truck. You might be better to carry the canoe on the truck and just get a small M146 (roughly 4x6) for gear.

Custom Trailer (kayak/dual sport +gear)

I had the same problem so ended up building mine. size about 4'X7' with wheel width same as 08 tacoma4x4,Brackets are removable. I carry a double Hobie Mirage which weighs around 80 pounds on rack, dual sport weighs around 275 plus i load with all the other stuff "Required" to enjoy the trip.Tail gate works as load ramp, tongue is adjustable to hold kayak (its 14' long)so it does not contact truck and fwc(pop-up camper),15"wheels,3500pd axle 4 leaf springs Will post loaded pictures next time i load Which will be in a couple of weeks as we are planing on spending some time on the river near Yuma doing some fishing/exploring!
WE have used this set up for many trips to Baja and have been able to get to any beach we can get the truck to with no problems. Maybe this will give you some ideas!
Drive slow and enjoy "its the journey"
