HELP 1991 FJ80 won't start

A few days ago my Landcruiser FJ80 (sitting in Anchorage, Alaska) wouldn't start due to a dead battery. No problem, It needs a new battery. I jumped it and drove it for about an hour. I then turned it off and it would not start again... No worries the battery shop is the next stop, except they don't open until 10am... I jumped it again and left it running while I had breakfast. Within 30 minutes it died. Now it will not start at all. I put a new battery in it, added 2 bottles of gas line anti freeze (just in case). I had it towed someplace safe, and headed to the lower 48...

I am heading back up tomorrow with new fusible links, and a new EFI relay. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what else it might be? I really don't wnat to get up there and not have the right parts of tools... ant suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated.

(it was about 2 degrees Fahrenheit when this happened)

Wouldn't turn over at all or it wouldn't fire?

Again, cranks but no fire? Or no crank at all?

alternator? sounds like the battery is not starting. is it clicking? could be the starter. mine is acting up, but doesnt account for dying...

Sorry, I meant to include that. It cranks all day, but won't fire. So no problem with the Starter motor ...

I am going to replace the fusible links, EFI relay, and fuel filter, then check for codes by jumping TE1 to E1 and then jump FP to B+ to see if the fuel pump is working... It just seems strange that it died while idling and wont fire now.... As I am not too familiar with Landcruisers (or Toyotas for that matter), I was wondering if there was anything that could be suspect, possibly because of the low voltage battery, or the cold..

Thanks

Pat

I would post the question on ih8mud and you will probably have answers coming out your ears. That's where I go for all my tech questions.

I had a similar problem with my '92 80.

Battery was good...cranked, would fire up sometimes and then die right away.

I replaced the EFI relay (I carry a few as spares)...same problem.

Turned out to be the ignition coil module that was bad.

I'd buy one and take it with you...just in case they are not readily available in AK.

Good luck!

I would go on a limb and guess the ignition coil module too if I was a betting man or secondly the efi relay.

Kurt, can you elaborate for future reference? My recollectionfor checking for spark is to pull a plug and plug wire. stick the plug back in and turn it over and verify there is spark. Might be hard to do if you're by yourself. Any more to it than that?

That works, alternitevely you can just pull a single wire and stick a screwdriver in the end and get the other part of the screwdriver 'close' to a grounded object. It is going to be tough to do one manned but it will help you identify whether you have an ignition (spark) issue or a fueling issue.

Thank you everyone for your help. I replaced the EFI Relay and it started right up... Took a long time to warm up and idle in -2 f weather, but all is good again..
