Help! 1999 7.3L Tranny Options

Hey y'all.

I have a '99 7.3 4X4. It's a SK 4x4 conversion with all Ujoint steering and suspension. It's a Sporty so it's heavy, around 10k lbs but the gearing was altered to handle everything (can't remember to what. Something.10) I've never been happy with the transmission on my van. It falls into distress on really windy steep roads (flashing OD light), doesn't seem to have a second gear to speak of, and now I'm looking at needing a new rebuild only 3 years and 30k miles since my last. The paperwork from the last rebuild ID'd it as a 4R100. Is there another better model that is interchangable? I know there's a 5R100. Is that better? Swappable? I'd totally appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

I have a 95 with a e4od
I’m interested too. Mine is having a hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd lately.
I have to back off the accelerator to get it to kick into 2nd.
Not sure what the best options are either. 7.3 as well.

Probably 4:10 gears, which is what I also have.

Sounds like you had a bad rebuild. These tranny's are actually pretty stout, when properly maintained.
The 5R110 will not mate with a 7.3. You are stuck with the 4R100, and maybe beefing it up.

Be sure and also add a 6.0 cooler to your rig (26 row) and upgrade to a triple disc TC!

The E40D had a TSB for the FIPL which causes it to shift too soon, not at all and all kinds of crazy stuff. It's supposed to be replaced every 50k miles. My trans was constantly hunting for gears, shifting too soon and not kicking down, I replaced this as per instructions and now(well I sold it, but, then) it was like butter. Night and day difference. I suggest you start here. If you have a diesel get a new fuel filter while your at it because you'll have to take it off to get to it, two birds one stone you know.

The trans cooler from the 6.0 is definitely a good upgrade. My trans rarely will hit 200 degrees since I installed the 6.0 cooler. Get the OEM Ford cooler, sometimes you can find them on ebay.

I haven't looked in a number of years, but Ford used to offer a rebuilt 4R100 HD as a rebuilt option. I don't know if you can order that from a dealer anymore.

I own a 99 F350 and used to be up to speed on everything Powerstroke and Superduty. I haven't followed as closely the last few years. If you are serious (I mean $$$$) about your 4R100, then these two places are considered the holy grail of the 4R100:

Good luck.
