*Help* 2006 Mitsubishi Montero Gas smell

Hello fellow Montero/Pajero owners!

I'm currently having a problem with my 06 Montero, It has a gas smell around the right rear wheel well and a little bit inside the rear passenger side area. I had a P0455 code that came out prior to the smell and I thought I've had resolved it by replacing my gas cap but the code came back 2 weeks after.

Please help as I love driving this vehicle but the gas consumption is crazy driving on the highway to work around 45KM (Around 28 miles) back and forth with a full tank I can go through half a tank in one day driving to work :/

Kind regards,

Rmonteroo.

You followed me, so now we're both lost
I would check the rubber hose past the gas cap. It may be cracked.
Is there any fuel leaking on the ground when parked?
There is also an EVAP tank in the rear passenger corner of the vehicle that may be causing problems.

Your fuel consumption also seems excessive, but that may be speed/weight related. Traveling over 65mph with this vehicle will cause the fuel mileage to drop significantly faster.

Are you in the rust belt? If you are, or if the truck lived there for several years, the filler neck assembly is probably rusted out. Rock Auto sells replacements.

Hi Michael!

There are no signs of leaks on the ground as far as I know of, mostly just the smell of gas.
I'll check the rubber hose and the EVAP tank later during the day :)

As for the fuel consumption, on the highway I mostly run at a steady 100 Km/H roughly 60 Mph.

The vehicle is also came with 265/75R16 LT, roof rack and hitch when I bought it. Idk if this adds a lot of weight I got this vehicle a month ago...

Hi Plh!

I live in the great province of Alberta Canada :)

I guess that might be the issue because vehicles do get turned into swiss cheese out here especially Japanese vehicles.

I'll have a peek once the wife gets the vehicle home!

Also if it is the case are there any tutorial for replacing the filler neck?

Thanks!

It is pretty easy, there are several 10mm bolts holding a protector shield covering it (rear wheel well) and 3 bolts inside the filler door. Several vacuum hoses and the main fill hose. Expect the 10mm bolts to break off due to rust. I drilled mine out and replaced with new ones. Took me a couple hours to do the job. Next will be your rear brake hard lines...

Okay will check once I do get the vehicle.

What do you mean regarding the rear brake hard lines?

Thanks!

As a contrast to plh’s experience with brake line replacement, I’ve done mine before as well, and I hated every minute of the job.

I didn't say I didn't hate it! Having a 25' spool of 3/16 line, a tubing bender and a bubble flair tool made the job bearable.
