Help..questions replacing leafs springs on my 04 Tacoma

Just came in from garage doing my suspension, front went in smooth no problems (OME 880), rear is a different story. Ive pulled and changed leafs on old jeeps and scouts but this was a whole different animal, thought I would breeze through it. I was out of my comfort zone on how high you have to lift it...maybe I dont have the correct tools for the job.
1. Rear leaf spring front bolt hanger: could not get it to budge, got nut off gas tank side. It appears to be seized so my guess it will need to be sawzall off? Ive been putting liquid wrench on it for 2 days. If I even could get it to turn how the hell do you get the bolt pushed out since you cant get a hammer in there due to the gas tank?
2.Shackle end of leaf spring: I assume you have to remove both leaf and frame end nuts?, the shackle is a 1 piece unit with the bolts welded to one side? so you pull it out as 1 piece with the 2 bolts attached? make sense?
3. I noticed when I got the leaf seperated from axle, the axle shifted forward. Is it a problem to get the center bolt to seed on new leaf without some sort of ratchet system?
4. I had no idea how high you have to get the rear body lifted to get the leaf seperated from axle...I had to go to hi lift in my reciever hitch, was very uncomfortable with this. Had jack stands on frame and jack on axle but still....is there any trick?

This is the first time I could not get something like this complete, part of it is I dont have a 2nd vehicle so I cant just leave it or go get parts if needed in the middle of the job, I may have to take it somewhere to be finished, very frustrating. Any advice appreciated.

Remove bolt, sawzall between the hanger and the spring on both sides... it drops right out. I actually use a cut-off wheel on a grinder. The springs have a bonded metal sleeve in the bushing, on many trucks the spring bolt seizes to this sleeve thus resulting in your dilemma. If you bought the springs local or have a Toyota shop local check with them about the bolts, they should stock/offer them as its very common, otherwise you will likely have to order them from the dealership or find a really good nut/bolt place that has a metric bolt with the correct shoulder.

Correct.

Not really, get a slight bit of tension on the leaf and then grab the axle and force it to line up with the spring. I've never had to use a ratchet strap on Tacoma OME installs but I have with other vehicles just to make things easy.

That's about it. With good heavy-duty jack-stands placed just forward of the fixed spring hanger, you should be good to go.

Thanks Kurt! I guess I was doing everything right, just that 1 bolt causing me all the frustration. Would you recomend a front end alignment ASAP or should I wait for it to settle a little bit? Tires have 80k so not worried about bad wear on them.

Depends, what are you doing tire wise? If you plan to run what you have for a bit then yes... go ahead and get it aligned. If you plan to get new rubber under there in the short term (couple days), I'd flog the suspension a bit for a day or two, get your new tires and have an alignment done at the same time.

Have friend with a shop, going to get the rear done this saturday. Front 880s are working great, love the ride, they started out at the full 2" lift and have settled to 1
1/2" with about 200 miles on them.

I just ordered this setup with the 880s; wheelers 5 pack, all new hardware, and the rough country shocks for my 04 xcab 4x4...keep us in The loop on how yours turns out!

Its all done and turned out exactly as I had hoped, ride is so much better! Those front hanger bolts on the rear were a biatch to remove, otherwise all went smooth. Right now still sitting at 1 1/2 front and 2 rear, this week hope to get new tires and alignment. Ill get pics up soon.
