High output alternator.

If you want to run high draw items you are going to have to have a high output alternator.

So...jinxed by Martyn...;)

On my way home from NE this evening my stock alternator went out on me. :(

So...what are my upgrade options? :D Oh yeah, and I'm going to require any special wiring if I upgrade to a high output unit?

As usual I did my own research after asking the question. Here's what I found

Most parts houses offer the stock 90a version and the upgraded 120a version. Advance Auto also offers a 136a option. Here's the info

Advance Auto Parts H.O. Alt for Jeep/Dodge Chrysler

Autolite Import Alternator: Pro-TechTM Import; Reman

Vehicle: 1998 JEEP CHEROKEE
Engine: L6 4.0 Liter FI
Alternator: Remanufactured; With 136 Amp Alternator
Part Number: 13746

I also spoke with a fellow club memeber who is an ASE & Chrysler Certified Master Tech (not to mention a Jeep & wheeling fanatic) and he said upgrading alternators should require no addition wiring upgrades in my vehicle, so long as the options/accessories installed later have the proper wiring, fuses, etc.. for the amps & volts that they draw from the system.

When ever I upgrade to a higher output alternator I also run a 10ga. wire from the battery post on the alternator directly to the battery. I run this in parallel with what ever is stock. The added weight is minimal and the piece of mind can't be bought.

DOH! The stock 120a alternator upgrade won't fit in the stock 90a alternator brackets! :violent-smiley-031: I'm not going to bother trying to fit a 136a, surely it's bigger yet and I don't want to fabricate custom brackets. Also, a mean green or other custom alternative is out of the budget so I guess it's std alternator & dual batteries for me.

I think that when I'm running solo trips I'll just pull my interstate battery (for the camper) off of the charger and use it as a backup in the Jeep. It has a 160hr reserve so that should cover me for sure. Perhaps I'll work out some way to allow the Jeep to charge it when it's plugged into the Jeep also.

I recently had my stock alternator rebuilt/rewound to 120A output (it tested at 150A) by Boyle Future Technology in Auburn CA. They did a great job, turned around normally in about a week. When mine didn't initially test well enough, they got a new batch of parts (rotor or stator) and did it again, so it took a little longer. Great service and it cost $201 shipped back to me. Highly recommended. I think they specialize in Toyota, but it's worth a call. No issues with fitting an aftermarket alternator, since they use your stock case.
