Hightailing it - Wisconsin to Washington with my lover

This trip is a few things: a couple years old, not terribly off roady, still "ongoing" in a sense, and was probably the scariest and most amazing thing I've done in my life. Imagine: beginning a relationship (long distance to boot: 500 miles with only 6 in person visits) to moving cross country together in no more than 4 months. That's what Michelle and I did. EXPO has been a great inspiration for me the last few years, and with the onslaught of potentially getting a new truck, I've been on here so much, I felt I should contribute something. Since it's the stories that really get me going, I decided I'd share that (I'll spare you the mushy stuff.)

Day 1: Sun Prairie, WI - Worthington, MN

We decided we would leave on August 31, 2010. We were headed to Seattle, WA. That is literally all we knew. We had money in our bank acct's, but no jobs, friends or living accommodations to arrive to. The vehicle we packed up was my 1988 4runner. The 5sp 22-RE may not have been the most tow-capable vehicle, but it was mine and it ran. Done deal. The trailer was some hobbled piece I got from an old landlady's backyard. I cleaned it up and used it to transport my motorcycle project from shop to shop, as well as my life possessions during my many moves. This pic was from before we left, my last within-state move...

DSCF2006.jpg

After spending the evening prior packing as much as possible on my shoddy trailer and into the back of the 4runner, Michelle and I were off. We departed from my parents house, and you could just see the look in their eyes that said "be safe, we love you, we want to go too!" It's hard leaving family, but as my mother said "a light will always be on, a door always open."

We directed our path to go through Abbotsford, WI. My grandmother is an amazing women, and I wanted to see her before leaving. A well chosen first stop. She had breakfast waiting for us, and my uncle was up from OH to help send us off.

DSCF2700.jpg

After leaving grandmas place, we forgot to get gas and were running on fumes. Nothing like whipping across a 4 lane interstate to fly through the police/maintenance turnout to whip across 4 more lanes with a tiny overloaded trailer just to get some gas.

Back on the road, Michelle was driving. Crossing into Minnesota, she completely missed the Mississippi. Being an OH girl who spent the last 5 years in KY, she was anxious to see every single incredible thing during this trip. Only once we got past Minneapolis did she learn she had missed it. How do you not see a huge river like that?

DSCF2703.jpg
DSCF2704.jpg

I must also add that Michelle had never driven my truck before (she closed her lease on a 200x VW Jetta before she came to WI), nor had she driven with a trailer. Of course, with that, we hit Minneapolis about morning rush hour time.

DSCF2705.jpg

And, while this was all happening, I was dismembering my phone. The slide-open/close mechanism had finally loosened and failed, and all I could scrounge in the cab to fix it with was a section of baling wire (which I filed into a flat screwdriver with a rock) and my pink Benchmade knife (which I have lost and dearly miss.)

DSCF2706.jpg

I did eventually get it.

After leaving the city, going was pretty smooth. Storm clouds had moved across the state earlier in the day, and we were right on their heels. Traffic lightened up and we were able to relax, windows down, with the smell of farmland and fresh rain wafting in. The sun starting breaking within a couple hours of leaving Minneapolis, and it was beautiful.

I guess some people will consider Minnesota part of the Heartland. When I hear that term, certain images come to mind. We saw some of those things... and a wind turbine.

DSCF2722.jpg

We finally arrived in Worthington, MN. A quick stop at camp to secure a site and dump the trailer, then into town for some bourbon (Michelle has KY infused it her, to the bone.)

The sunset from here was incredible. A great end to a great day.

Day 2: Worthington, MN - Badlands, SD

Leaving Minnesota and entering South Dakota, you can't help but fall in love with the landscape. To me, the Midwest has a certain honest and simple quality to it. Though we were on the fringes here, I still saw it. Things don't have to be complex to be beautiful.

And since we were in South Dakota, we of COURSE had to stop and wander through the Corn Palace. All the gimmicky crap surrounding the Palace is kinda fun too...

Continuing into South Dakota, I got my first ever glimpse of the Missouri River. A waterway bathed in history of exploration and discovery, it more than stirred within me a sense that a change was truly happening.

DSCF2758.jpg
DSCF2761.jpg

The far side of river, I fell hard for the landscape. The small yet strongly corrugated river valley was beautiful, and as we walked down to the water, I felt a pull...

No turning back now

If anyone ever wants to get lost with nothing but grassland and the wind before you, this is it

As we wandered in this small section of heaven, we saw the whole world before us: ready to be explored, ready to be lived in...

Coming into the Badlands in the late afternoon, the sun had warmed up the air and the land, and it felt so comforting. For those of you who have never been the Badlands, it's like another planet. The erosion that has happened here over the millenia has created a harsh and rugged landscape, worthy of only the most hearty of flora and fauna. Antelope and bison wander freely...

DSCF2818.jpg

We drove to the far side of the park to park the truck and trailer and begin our backcountry hike. We were only staying one night, but it was worth the hike in. As the sun set on the horizon, the grassland lit up as though it were made of gold.

Another beautiful day with a beautiful girl, ended in a beautiful place, with a beautiful nightcap. Best drink-straight-from-the-bottle location ever...

And after what was by far the windiest night I have ever spent in a tent, we awoke to a chilly yet jaw-dropping sight. Went we set up camp the night before, it was after dusk and we couldn't see our surroundings that well. Opening the tent door and stepping outside was amazing (though we to weigh down the tent so it didn't blow away.) As the minutes went by, the air warmed and was utterly filled with the scent of wild sage.

And once we struck camp and hiked out, I realized that a certain someone (Michelle) had lost my Nalgene. She volunteered to wander back a ways and see if it fell out closer to the trailhead. I don't know what she could see from the trail, but my vantage point allowed me to see she was clearly walking towards a bison. She survived, but didn't not recover the Nalgene.

Day 3: Badlands, SD (Wall, SD) - Bighorn Mtns, WY

Clearly we had to make a stop in Wall, SD and wander through Wall Drug. A significant piece of Americana, despite the kitschy gimmicky entirety of it all. Oh what fun!

I've seen pictures of the monstrous earthmovers and dumptrucks that operate within mining and excavation industries, but seeing these tires was simply amazing. These aren't even the largest: They make them a bit larger!

8586930450_9e70c2bd12.jpg

And coming into the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore was an obvious stop. I gotta say, this was the 1st time I really worried about how the 22-RE 4runner loaded to the gills AND pulling a trailer was going to handle some of the mountains we would have to go through...

Looks like you had a great time and enjoyed hamming it up for the camera. I got a laugh out of some of your shots. Take good care of that girl, she looks like a keeper!

Entering Wyoming was breathtaking. I don't know if this is the state that people call "God's country", but it should be. If I were told I had to choose, from all the states I've been in/through in my life thus far, to stay in, FOREVER, I would choose Wyoming.

We spent so much time gawking while driving, I think we ended up going a bit slow. The day was racing by and we were not, so when we came upon the turnoff for Devil's Tower, we got excited but apprehensive about how far off the path it would take us. It was worth it, don't get me wrong...
