Eventhough this trip was done a few months ago, I am posting this to see if there are any interests here in joining me on another trip similar to this sometime this year. I'm interested in meeting some of the crew here and I am always happy to lend a helping hand.
Labor Day weekend we took a trip south of the border to Monterrey and I finally got to do some canyon adventure guided trip in the Sierra Madre. From the wheeling previous trips there I had being seeing all these awesome and gorgeous canyons so I searched for guided trips and sure enough I found some hill climbing guides offering the service.
We took a hiking trips down one of many wet canyons called Matacanes that involved mainly downhill hiking of about 8km, two 23 meter repels, several natural water slides, two swims through caves, and about 15-20 jumps into the freezing river. Two of the jumps were pretty extreme with one being ~10 meters and the other over ~12 meters. With no mountain climbing experience or repelling it all went fairly well.
First to get there we hooked up with http://www.ibo.com.mx/ (use the Google translate tool bar) at the parking lot of Cola de Caballo Hotel at 5am. We all jumped into a E350 and took a 2 hour trip along the rocky mountain side roads, only accessible with a 4x4. We got to a small town called Potrero Redondo (used to be a wood mill town back in the day before the land became Federal Property) to get ready, check gear, and talk a little about what to expect. Next was a nice 45min hike to the first repel; once you go down the first repel there is no turning back.
The days before have been rainy which made the water levels a lot higher and made it all a whole lot more rewarding. The day was perfect the way it turned out b/c it wasn't hot or rainy until we finished the trip and made to the van. Then it just started pouring; we couldn't have timed it better.
Normally the water is crystal clear blue but again with all the rain they have been getting, made the water a light green to little murky in some places. Overall the scenery was awesome, the guides were very helpful, and it was a very stress relieving exercise to taking in. I will defiantly hook up with these guys again for other trails.
Pictures were taken by one the guys on the trip.
