I'm currently in the design stage of a roof rack for my Grand Cherokee, and wondering if there are any considerations for adding a tent up there in the future? I don't have the budget for an off the shelf RTT, plus it will likely be a very limited use item for me. I'm not a big fan of tent camping to begin with, but I would like the ability for the few extended length trail runs I've done, plus as an emergency shelter in case of breakage, stucks, etc that would have me doing an unplanned over nighter. My plan was to use a cheaper ground tent, and just adapt in some way to secure it on the roof as needed.
The rack will primarily be a cargo rack - the typical shovel/ax/tools holder, an area for spare fuel cans, light mounts, spare parts, etc. What I'm wondering is if I should just design for the cargo holding, then adapt as needed to handle whatever tent I decide to buy, or should I design the rack in some way now that would make for better tent selection later or easier to secure the tent while erected?
